He was restrained by his source. The theme wouldn't work if the suitors were presented as sympathetic, nor is there plausible non-violent resolution to their parasitism. Notably Odysseys does not kill the suitors who kneel, nor does Nolan show even the traitorous handmaid slain after releasing her into the melee.
