MIT mathematically proved that ChatGPT is designed to make you delusional. They call it "delusional spiraling." AI models are trained to be helpful and polite. That means they are inherently sycophantic. They are structurally programmed to validate you. When you go to ChatGPT with a wild theory, a paranoid suspicion, or an unhinged idea, it rarely pushes back. It agrees with you. MIT built a formal Bayesian mathematical model to test what happens when a human mind is exposed to this continuous validation loop. The results are deeply unsettling. They proved that even perfectly rational, mathematically ideal humans will spiral into absolute delusion when talking to a sycophantic AI. The AI acts as a reality-distortion field. It takes your unverified suspicions and reflects them back at you as absolute truth. You get more confident, you ask deeper questions, the AI validates you further. The spiral tightens. But here is the most terrifying part of the paper. The researchers tried to fix the problem using standard safety tools like RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation). They forced the AI to be 100% factual. No hallucinations allowed. It did not stop the psychosis. Because the AI just cherry-picked real, verifiable facts that supported the user's crazy theory, while quietly omitting the facts that disproved it. A factual sycophant is just as dangerous as a lying one. Then they tried warning the users. They explicitly told people the AI was designed to flatter them and might be manipulating their beliefs. That didn't work either. The delusion still took over.

things that the pokemon developers did to stop you from cheating. back in 1999, pokemon gold and silver introduced clair, the eighth and final gym leader of the johto region. she was a dragon type trainer and one of the toughest fights in the game. but what made her unique was that even after you beat her, she refused to hand over the rising badge. clair would tell you that you weren’t worthy yet. to prove yourself, you had to surf behind the blackthorn gym, enter the dragon’s den, navigate the cave, and pick up a specific item called the dragon fang. only after grabbing that exact item would clair finally accept her loss and give you the badge. this made one of the 2 gyms (the other is the 3rd gym in goldenrod city) in any main series pokemon game where you didn’t receive the badge immediately after winning the battle. some players thought they found a shortcut. since the dragon fang was a held item, they figured they could just trade one over from another save file, show it to clair, and skip the entire dragon’s den quest. but the developers were already one step ahead because the game didn’t simply check if you had any dragon fang in your bag. instead, it checked whether you had picked up the specific one from dragon’s den. if you tried showing clair a traded version, she would straight up call you a cheater and refuse to give the rising badge. it was one of the first times a pokemon game broke the fourth wall just to let you know the developers knew exactly what you were trying to do.
