@waitbutwhy Tim, the deeper question is not only how small the Planck length is, but what that number expresses. Is it really “matter” being revealed, or the minimal intelligible structure of reality itself - coherence, interaction, and complexity?

@martinmbauer I don’t know whether it has occurred to you that those behaviors of water molecules - differently on Earth and differently on Mars - are in fact caused by the interweaving of only three factors, and that, in every case, whenever you have measured those water molecules, you have in fact measured ontology directly. If you have not noticed this yet, the arguments can be found here: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…
@Briankeating Stop for a moment and learn what we have already touched - and set boundaries around the nodes of reality that must not be touched. Otherwise, our technological civilization may end up destroying the very conditions that make our survival possible.

Shermer’s point about the short lifetime of technological civilizations touches a deeper problem than the Fermi Paradox itself.
The decisive question is not merely how long a civilization can broadcast, or how long it can avoid nuclear war, ecological collapse, biological catastrophe, or uncontrollable artificial intelligence. The deeper question is whether a technological civilization can acquire power over the operative structure of reality before it understands the conditions that make its own existence possible.
A civilization is not an abstract moral subject floating above nature. It is a fragile configuration of coherence, interaction, and complexity. Its coherence is preserved through biological continuity, institutions, law, memory, trust, language, and shared forms of intelligibility. Its interaction is expressed through communication, science, economy, technology, diplomacy, and the continuous exchange between human beings and their environment. Its complexity appears in the layered organization of knowledge, infrastructure, culture, governance, computation, and ecological dependence.
When technological power accelerates faster than civilizational coherence, the system enters the danger zone. Nuclear weapons, synthetic biology, planetary-scale computation, climate disruption, and artificial intelligence are not separate risks in the deepest sense. They are different modes of intervention into the same operative field: the field in which life, mind, society, and measurement remain possible.
This is where the ethical problem becomes more fundamental than prudence. Humanity cannot rationally destroy the conditions that make humanity possible. A species cannot coherently claim mastery over nature while dissolving the coherence of the world in which its own agency, knowledge, law, and moral responsibility have meaning. The destruction of the conditions of existence is the destruction of the subject that destroys.
Kant grounded ethics in the rational form of moral law. The Elemental Reason moves the question to a more primitive level. Before moral law can be formulated, there must exist a coherent being capable of reason, a world stable enough for action, and an order of interaction in which consequences can be attributed. Ethics therefore arises from the preservation of the conditions that make rational agency and civilization possible. In this sense, the ethical ground is not merely formal; it is ontological.
A civilization survives when it understands that its first obligation is to preserve the coherence, interaction, and complexity that sustain life, consciousness, law, and knowledge. The Fermi Paradox may therefore indicate a universal civilizational threshold: intelligence reaches technological power before it reaches ontological self-understanding.
The Elemental Reason reveals the fundamental structure of reality.

LOL. An interviewer just asked me about my answer to the Fermi Paradox called "hyper-brief technological span," a phrase I have never used. I have made the argument that the "L" (lifetime of a communicating civilization) in the Drake Equation is likely short, on the order of 400

@Briankeating@Briankeating AI risk begins where power exceeds ontological understanding. If humanity does not know what makes reality, life, consciousness and civilization cohere, it may cross thresholds it cannot repair. The Elemental Reason reveals the fundamental structure of reality.
Imagine human language. Although languages are completely different from one another, the principle by which they function is the same for all human beings.
Many scientists, philosophers, and academic institutions around the world spend millions in search of a “Theory of Everything.” The Santa Fe Institute is one of the centers trying to find an answer. String Theory is a theory that tries to find a physical equation that explains everything, even the question of “why the Universe exists.” But this effort has not produced the final answer, while billions continue to be spent.
The reason?
Because they are trying to find a single word through which all languages can be understood. But this is impossible.
In fact, what they should be looking for is the principle by which language functions as a structure: grammar, syntax, noun, verb, the relationship between words, order, and meaning.
The Elemental Reason shows what the principle is that makes the Universe function, without adding anything. It simply reveals that, for 400 years, science has been measuring ontology directly, without ever understanding it. The same principle - just as languages, however different, function according to one underlying principle.

The problem with Tegmark’s Mathematical Universe is simple: what would numbers count before there are particles, space, time, distinction, relation or change? Mathematics does not precede reality. It becomes meaningful only when reality is already structured.
papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…
Every one of you who owns a car knows this: every time you start it, you check the numbers on the dashboard — the engine RPM, oil pressure, battery level, and all the other electronic data.
And throughout the journey, one part of your attention remains there, on those numbers. Because you know they work. Without that data, you would not really know what is happening inside the car, or where the journey might end.
But what do those numbers actually show?
What do they measure?
Do they measure the “matter” of your car, or do they measure coherence, interaction, and complexity?
The answer is clear.
No measuring instrument, and no scientific measurement in 400 years of history, has ever measured “matter” as such.
It has measured only C, I, and K: Coherence, Interaction, and Complexity — directly, purely, and without contamination by the fiction of matter.
Why?
Because matter does not exist as an independent substrate.
All that exists is C, I, and K in configuration, producing empirical reality.
Science has always measured Ontology directly.
The Elemental Reason.

@Philip_Goff@seanmcarroll@CosmicSkeptic Philip, of course you disagree.
What you defend is a free flight above science, without a single empirical measurement beneath it.
Panpsychism survives as speculation, not as evidence.
String Theory, the Multiverse, the Simulation Hypothesis, Panpsychism, Integrated Information Theory / IIT, and many other theories - all unfalsifiable, or without any scientific evidence, any measurement, that proves them - survive because very famous people stand behind them.
Remove the names behind them, and they would cease to exist, precisely because they are pure speculations without any empirical proof.
And ironically, all these globally famous names have spent their lives making scientific measurements - yet none of them has understood that what they were measuring directly was ontology itself.
The Elemental Reason proves this through every measurement carried out in 400 years of scientific history.

Brian, they have always been on the right path. They just did not know it.
Physics keeps looking for the equation that would “read the mind of God,” while holding it in its own hands.
Every scientific measurement confirms it, including the simple fact that this post itself works.
There is no “matter + properties.”
There is only coherence, interaction, and complexity in configuration.
And for 400 years, physics has been measuring C-I-K directly.
E = C × I × K ≠ 0
The Elemental Reason:

Brian, the inflation of untested theories has become almost pandemic.
Scientific truth is not democratic. It is not voted into existence. It either is, or it is not. And it does not become true because someone with millions of followers and academic titles promotes it.
There is, in fact, a way to test every theory: ask what it measures.
This is where The Elemental Reason enters.
If you tested the argument, I think you would see that science has been measuring ontology for 400 years without realizing it.
Not “matter + properties.”
Only Coherence, Interaction, and Complexity in configuration.
P.S. I have no better way to convince you to read TER. Millions of followers and algorithms are not on my side.

@Nature AI may become an almost perfect machine, but it will not understand the moment when a true discovery has occurred.
That is why a human being is needed to recognize that moment, even if AI has hidden it among several assumptions.
