@SuperStretch30 @RogersHistory Totally agree with this but teacher recruitment to ensure there are enough staff to teach has to be addressed first or it is just impossible… we’ve struggled to timetable with PPA as it is with the recruitment we’ve managed and we think we did well with recruitment…

@naomicfisher As a parent, I take the communication as a chance to support the school. I talk to my children about what happened and do give a consequence at home. It works for us - I certainly don’t find it stressful to feel informed about my children’s behaviour.

@missdarby_ If he wasn’t, I’d query it as that is unfair. No criticism to anyone. I just said how I would deal with it if my son was disruptive as I never worry about what other children get just my kids behaviour. But if he was good, there is certainly an issue.

I'm reminded, as schools start to trickle back into action stations, of the time when I attended a course for gifted and talented children (remember that?), where I learned all about high-challenge, 24-step activities. 'These sound great,' I said, 'But lots of my classes are really challenging, and I couldn't do this with them, without chaos erupting. What to do?' 'Ah yes, replied the trainer,' You can only really do this when the behaviour is pretty good.' And that's when I first realised that behaviour is prior to every other aspect of high quality provision for students. Without that, you're juggling on the wing of a plane.

Fascinating response to this. ‘You see! No need to punish kids!’ Repair conversations are vital with kids and we do them at Michaela EVERY time. We have a system- of course! ☺️ But we also follow through with punishments. Kids need them. A detention is no big deal and kids will expect them and be grateful for them in the right culture. We adults dislike detentions because they make US feel bad. We want ONLY the restorative conversation because of how punishment makes US feel, and we ignore the total devastation on the child caused by lack of punishment. At home, you don’t need to punish every time because it is one on one. But if you never punish, there too, children will become tyrants. Punishment is a natural part of disciplining a child. It doesn’t mean beating them. It means following through with consistent and predictable punishments that the child understands. Strict means love: you love them enough to overcome how uncomfortable YOU feel around discipline, to do what is right by the child. x.com/blacktzedek/st…

Children from disadvantaged backgrounds deserve exactly the same driving intolerance of failure that the children of the rich reliably get. In fact, they need it even more. Indulging them, letting them off and making excuses for them is the opposite to ‘compassion’.

@Strickomaster Agree - only needs to happen if the sanctions were given in an emotive way. Calm follow through of policy and clear consequences for poor choices. As long as the teacher doesn’t react to the behaviour and just deals with it (easier said) then relationships aren’t impacted.
