@v_dotti So that’s the UK/US difference I was referring to. In US punctuation, if you’re quoting someone and then *they* quote someone else, you use single quotation marks for the quote-within-a-quote: “Amanda told me, ‘Don’t worry,’” Dotti said.

Single quotation marks rarely appear in US style. They're not used for "scare quotes"😉--only for quoted words/sentences within quotes. Would you be interested in a "friends with benefits" arrangement? "My Tinder date announced he wanted 'benefits, not friends,'" Lori said.

@jimmyITG I was trying to be too clever (and brief) in my tweet. Scare quotes are quotation marks used to show the writer is distancing herself from a term, indicating that she is using it sarcastically or that she’s using it in a special way, as with a slang term she is disdainful of.
