Remembered with pride in Spain and Colombia alike, José Celestino Mutis began as a physician trained in Cádiz and Seville—and in New Granada became the driving force behind a scientific enterprise that brought American nature into the wider world of science.

And his legacy still lives on both sides of the Atlantic: in Colombia’s scientific memory, and in Madrid’s Real Jardín Botánico, where the collections and images of his expedition endure as a shared heritage of science, art, and discovery.

That is why Mutis belongs fully to the scientific history of both Spain and Colombia—and beyond them to the wider history of science. He did not simply study the American tropics: he helped build one of the systems through which the tropics entered the knowledge of the world.

When "On the Origin of Species" appeared in 1859, Darwin cited a mysterious Spaniard. He called him “the accurate Azara”. Yet Azara had died almost forty years earlier — and Darwin had never met him. How could Darwin quote a man he never met?
