WHO WAS ALFREID BEIT? Alfred Beit (1853–1906) was a German-born British financier, mining magnate, and philanthropist whose career was deeply intertwined with the "Scramble for Africa," Cecil Rhodes' imperial ambitions, and the economic development of southern Africa. His legacy is dual: as a key architect of colonial capitalism and infrastructure in the region (particularly what became Zimbabwe/Rhodesia), and as a major philanthropist whose trust continues to fund development. Early Life and Rise in South Africa Born in Hamburg to a Jewish family (converted to Christianity), Beit arrived in South Africa in 1875 as a diamond trader during the Kimberley diamond rush. He quickly demonstrated exceptional business acumen, recognizing the superior quality of local diamonds and pioneering efficient mining and trading methods. He partnered with figures like Julius Wernher and became a major player in the industry. His partnership with Cecil Rhodes was pivotal. Beit provided crucial financial backing and strategic expertise that helped Rhodes consolidate control of the diamond industry through De Beers (of which Beit became a life governor). He also invested heavily in the Witwatersrand gold fields. Together, they advanced British economic and political interests in the region. Role in Colonial Expansion and Rhodesia Beit was a strong supporter of Rhodes' vision for a British-dominated southern Africa, often described as the "silent partner" or financier behind many of Rhodes' schemes. Key aspects include: British South Africa Company (BSAC): He helped secure the royal charter for the BSAC, which administered the territory that became Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Beit played a significant role in the company's operations and the Pioneer Column's activities in the 1890s. Infrastructure: He backed railways (e.g., Rhodesia Railways, Beira Railway) and other projects to open up the interior for mining, trade, and settlement. Jameson Raid (1895–1896): Beit was involved in the planning and financing of this failed attempt to overthrow the Boer government in the Transvaal (South African Republic) to expand British influence. The raid's failure led to Rhodes' resignation as Cape Prime Minister; both men faced a British parliamentary inquiry. Beit was censured, resigned (temporarily) from some directorships, and paid a substantial fine, but he remained influential. Anglo-Boer War (1899–1902): He supported the British effort financially, including funding units like the Imperial Light Horse. Beit's involvement helped lay the economic foundations for white settler colonialism in Rhodesia, facilitating land acquisition, mining concessions, and transport networks that displaced indigenous populations and entrenched unequal resource distribution. Philanthropy and the Beit Trust Beit never married and died in 1906. His will left a large fortune (around £1.2 million at the time, equivalent to hundreds of millions today) to establish the Beit Trust, focused on infrastructure, education, and development in Southern and Northern Rhodesia (and later adapted for Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Malawi). Notable projects funded by the Trust include: Major bridges such as the Alfred Beit Bridge (Beitbridge border with South Africa, 1929), Otto Beit Bridge at Chirundu (1939), Birchenough Bridge, and many smaller ones. Schools, hospitals, railways, and other public works. Support for university education (e.g., Beit professorships) and research. The Trust remains active today, providing grants, scholarships (especially for postgraduate study in the UK and South Africa, with a "return and contribute" expectation), and support for health, education, conservation, and emergency relief in the three countries. It operates apolitically and has disbursed millions annually for infrastructure, libraries, clinics, and more.

Selby Bangani Ngcobo was born in 1908 in Pietermaritzburg, the son of a mine compound foreman who later became a teacher and saddler, Ngcobo studied at Adams College (JC, 1926), Fort Hare (BA, 1931), the University of Natal (B. Econ, 1937) and Yale University (M.A, 1940). In 1957-1958 he was a British Commonwealth Fellow at London University, which in 1964 awarded him a Ph.D. in economics. While a student at the University of Natal he took an active part in the All African Convention (AAC)meeting of December 1935. He later served on the Africans' Claims committee but soon afterwards withdrew from political activity to concentrate on his academic career. He taught economics at Fort Hare and after 1959 at the University College of Rhodesia and the University of Botswana, Lesotho, and Swaziland. "A man can't just sit around." 🪑✈️ That's what Larry Walters told reporters after he flew his garden chair into restricted airspace at 16,000 feet. In 1982, Larry — a truck driver who always dreamed of being a pilot but was rejected for poor eyesight, decided to take flight into his own hands. In his girlfriend's backyard, he tied 42 giant weather balloons filled with helium to his Sears patio chair. He packed sandwiches, a CB radio, and a pellet gun to pop balloons when he wanted to come down. He expected a peaceful little float. Instead, the moment he cut the tethers, Larry rocketed straight up at 800 feet per minute. He kept climbing until he reached 16,000 feet — drifting right into the busy flight paths of Los Angeles International Airport. Airline pilots were shocked to see a man in a lawn chair floating past their windows. When he finally tried to descend, he managed to shoot a few balloons, but his hands were so frozen from the altitude that he accidentally dropped his pellet gun. With no way to pop the rest, he drifted helplessly until catching onto power lines, causing a blackout in Long Beach. The FAA fined him. The media made him a folk hero. And today, his $109 patio chair sits in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. Larry Walters didn't just sit around. He flew. Absolute legend. 👇

Sundiata Keita was born in 1217 to King Naré Maghann Konaté who was a ruler of the Mandinka people and his wife Sogolon Condé. 🇲🇱 From birth, Sundiata was a cripple and suffers hunchback which made him a subject of ridicule. For this reason, he was always in the Palace and very close with his mother. When his father's Kingdom and Palace was conquered by King Soumaoro Kanté of Sosso, many people were killed but he was spared because of his physical conditions. However, Sundiata was determined to revenge this invation and eventually offer justice to his people who has been treated with Injustice by the Sosso invation. He eventually succeeded; Sundiata purposively travelled to the plain of Siby (var: Sibi) where he formed a brotherhood in order to liberate his country and people from the powerful Sosso king. Eventually, at The Battle of Kirina, Sundiata and his allies defeated the Sosso king, and he formed and became the first Emperor of the Mali Empire which became more powerful and prominent than the Kingdom of his father. Although, Sundiata Keita was born a cripple and with hunchback, he became one of the greatest Kings and warriors the African Continent has ever seen. Like Sundiata, you and I should not allow anything to be an obstacle on our way to take back Africa and rebuild our lost glory to honor the memories of our ancestors and give them justice.
