In a moment of spiking U.S. xenophobia, here's a number worth sitting with: The most native of "native-born" American children — kids on Native land — face higher child poverty than kids in 86% of school districts in the rest of the country.
We don't put crude in our tanks. We put gasoline and diesel. So why does everyone watch the oil price? This is the number that matters even more — refining margins. And they're back at levels we haven't seen since the 2022 oil crisis. The last time margins were here, everyone knew there was a crisis. This time we're being told it's over. I am honored and thrilled to have been selected for this fellowship! Data 4 The People's vision is to develop shared understanding of truth using data. Shared truth is the fabric of a vibrant society and democracy, and data can (and should) be the bedrock of shared truth. Sadly, data is a double-edged sword. In the wrong hands, it can extort, extract, profiteer, vilify, separate, and kill. But my favorite band GoGo Penguin titled one of their songs "The Antidote Is in the Poison." The same is true for data. It can also be used for good: it can connect, lift up, fix, build empathy, and rebuild. We need to make it easier for people to do this, and with AI, now we can. That's the infrastructure we plan to build in the coming year. My deepest gratitude to @osvllc for putting their trust in us to do this essential work. We're going to get it done. Since 1948, men's labor force participation has fallen from 87% to 67%, while women's climbed from 32% to 57% - peaking around 2000 and declining for both ever since. If these trends continue and immigration slows, the math on funding Social Security gets very difficult. (BLS) 🤔
This isn't a stock chart of $NVDA, it's the number of employees in mental health. Mental health employees: very little growth from 1990 through ~2015. Then it goes parabolic... BEFORE COVID and Telehealth. Now at 300K+ and climbing. I think it's smartphones and social media. Penetration hit critical mass ~2012-2014. By 2016 the mental health damage was showing up. @JonHaidt saw it in surveys. @DKThomp literally titled his latest pod 'Why American Happiness Just Fell Off a Cliff.' @charliebilello @charliebilello 2% was never a thing in the first place! It was a phase in time post GFR when shelter inflation was depressed. Given the makeup of CPI that pulled the entire measure down. And the Fed "took credit" for that. Here's the entire data series.
