@drjuliesmith I’d add that avoidance doesn’t always look like walking away. Sometimes it looks like constantly trying to make a situation feel safer. Unfortunately, that can keep anxiety alive just as effectively.
@GottmanInst One thing I’ve noticed is that therapists often focus on regulating the couple, but first they have to regulate themselves. A calm nervous system in the therapist can become an anchor for the room.
Conflict isn’t always maintained by two difficult people.
Sometimes it’s maintained by a communication system that keeps both people emotionally activated.
