I have to admit I’m skeptical of the need some people feel to constantly remind us that we aren’t normal. Neither are the circumstances. No one is under any obligation to hear us out, but consider leaving us alone instead. I promise there are other ways to get easy likes!

Just read “Confronting Fascism”. A lot of really prescient analysis in there. Definitely one to read and discuss if you’re perplexed by things like fascist appropriation of left-wing slogans, or why some white nationalists see kinship in jihadists.

@TwitterSupport I’m echoing the other complaints about the suspension of @scottkernest, which makes so little sense that it could only have been automated. They do not violate the Terms of Service and are a valuable resource to people leaving right-wing extremist movements.

Maybe this is a fairly common trajectory but I do think some of us get in and then are in denial not only about the violence but the sick joy people take in it and then have to come to terms with it and having enabled it. Fascism is no movement for kindhearted people.

It’s actually been quite a while since I got out of the far-right. I’ve been out for years longer than I was in. It still haunts me though, and there are things I have to do to keep myself grounded and productive as opposed to lapsing into self-loathing.

I don’t think our mistakes necessarily preclude us from being net-goods to the world going forward. It’s good to remind ourselves occasionally that then was then and now is now, that we’ve learned our lessons, have the humility to learn more, and are more ready to apply it.

One thing that helps is to periodically write out a post-mortem, reflect on how it happened, what factors made me vulnerable, what factors aided me in leaving, how the process unfolded, what I’ve learned, what I actually believed in detail, how my thinking has changed.
