What migratory birds are you looking forward to? Post a pic or share your ebird checklist that includes your favorite migratory species
On October 14, it will be bird migratory day! Here at the FOS, we are big supporters for reducing our impact that can be detrimental to migratory birds. The conservation theme this year is water: sustaining bird life and focuses on the importance of water to migratory birds.
There will also be student presentation awards for 1st place ($200), 2nd place ($100), and 3rdand 4th places ($50 each).
We here at FOS are counting down the days till the fall meeting and could not be more excited to see everyone! Students attending the FOS 50th Anniversary Celebration and Fall Meeting can apply for Attendance Scholarships of $200/student.
To apply, simply register as a student for the meeting and Saturday evening banquet and attend. Scholarship checks will be awarded at the banquet to students who have attend the Saturday Afternoon Scientific Session and the Saturday evening events.
On top of that, rarities such as Long-tailed Duck, Groove-billed Ani, Ash-throated Flycatcher and Red-breasted Nuthatch have also been recorded. Meet at the education center.
The Florida Ornithological Society’s fall meetings will have a fantastic field trip to Boyd Hill Nature Preserve on Friday, November 10 at 2pm! More than 20 species of wood-warbler during spring and fall migration have been recorded.

We are less than two months away from FOS’s fall meeting! We have some exciting field trips lined up for registered participants. One of them is in the Celery Fields and the trip leader is Jeanne Dubi. This field trip is on November 12, from 8am – noon.

Hurricane Idalia seems to have brought over a number of American Flamingoes to the western side of Florida. Florida Ornithological Society’s partner Florida Keys Hawkwatch also saw some of the action and spotted three flamingoes!
The Florida Ornithological Society encourages minimizing outdoor light usage during migration. We appreciate all the efforts in helping our feathered friends have a safe migration!
As bird migration activity increases this fall, it is important to minimize light pollution, especially on nights when flight movement is large. Light disorients a bird’s directionality and can have detrimental effects.
This is one of the many awesome talks that will be given at this year’s Florida Ornithological Meeting November 10-12 in St. Petersburg. We hope to see you all in person!
Bird vocalizations can be very complex and understanding what the messages of these vocalizations mean can be challenging. Suyash Sawant, a PhD student from the University of Florida, will give an inciteful talk on novel approaches to decipher these complex vocalizations.
