Manmohan Singh gets a posthumous clean chit as the Supreme Court closes the coal block allocation case after more than a decade. The controversy traces back to the Coalgate audit prepared under CAG Vinod Rai, who served from 2008 to 2013. The draft report surfaced in March 2012 and the final report was tabled in Parliament in August 2012, triggering a major political storm. One of the most debated allocations was the Talabira II coal block in Odisha. It was allotted to Hindalco Industries in 2005 when Dr. Manmohan Singh was serving as Prime Minister and was also handling the Coal Ministry portfolio. The political controversy soon turned into a criminal investigation. In October 2013, the CBI registered an FIR against Kumar Mangalam Birla and former Coal Secretary P.C. Parakh, alleging criminal conspiracy and abuse of official position. After completing its investigation, the CBI filed closure reports on 27 August and 21 October 2014. It concluded that there was no evidence of criminal intent, undue favour or any quid pro quo in the allocation process. The case took another turn on 11 March 2015. Special Judge Bharat Parashar rejected the CBI closure reports, refused to accept the clean chit and summoned the accused to face trial. The Supreme Court intervened within weeks. On 1 April 2015, it stayed the summoning order, effectively halting the proceedings while the appeals remained pending before the country's highest court. More than a decade later, on 29 July 2026, the Supreme Court accepted the CBI's closure reports. The bench held that the trial court had no compelling or cogent reasons to reject the investigating agency's findings. The verdict was significant for another reason. Dr. Manmohan Singh had passed away in December 2024, yet the Supreme Court decided the appeal on merits to erase the adverse observations made against him by the trial court. The case had unfolded during the peak of the India Against Corruption movement. Anna Hazare's campaign organised massive protests against the UPA government and demanded that all coal block allocations be cancelled. The legal battle has now ended, but the political debate continues. Will those who spent years presenting this as proof of corruption apologise? That appears unlikely, despite the Supreme Court's final verdict. Even if apologies are made, they may never travel as widely as the original allegations. Two Hunger Strikes. Two Generations. Forty-Two Years Apart. ​One ended with Prime Minister Indira Gandhi personally flying to Leh and offering a glass of juice. ​The other ended with Sonam Wangchuk being taken to a Delhi hospital after completing 21 days of fasting. ​Here's the remarkable story of the Wangchuk family. ​In 1984, Sonam Wangchuk's father, Sonam Wangyal, launched a hunger strike in Leh. He demanded Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for Ladakh's indigenous people to safeguard their identity and rights. ​Five days into the fast, the protest had reached Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Instead of sending officials, she personally flew to Leh, met Wangyal at his bedside, assured him that the Centre would address Ladakh's demands, and offered him a glass of juice to end his fast. Five years later, in 1989, Ladakh's indigenous communities were granted Scheduled Tribe status. ​Forty-two years later, Sonam Wangchuk once again chose the path of non-violent protest. ​This time, his fast was at the heart of the capital, demanding systemic education reform and accountability following national examination leaks. ​During the 21-day protest, no Union government representative publicly met him or held talks with him. Sonam Wangchuk joined the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar. He began an indefinite hunger strike on June 28, 2026, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged NEET-UG paper leaks and exam irregularities. The Delhi High Court ordered daily medical monitoring and directed authorities to provide necessary medical intervention to protect his life. On July 18 (Day 21 of the fast), Delhi Police shifted Wangchuk to Safdarjung Hospital, citing the court's order, expert medical advice, significant weight loss, and low blood sugar. Delhi Police said protesters caused slight commotion during the transfer, but officers exercised maximum restraint. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke alleged Wangchuk was forcibly detained and accused police of assaulting protesters during the transfer. Wangchuk's wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, alleged she was not allowed to carry her mobile phone into his eighth-floor room, with access beyond the sixth floor heavily restricted by police. Angmo also claimed medical reports were withheld and personal lawyers and doctors were not allowed to meet Wangchuk. She publicly opposed any oral or intravenous treatment without the consent of the family and Wangchuk's monitoring doctors, questioned the need for hospitalization, said he had appeared fine the previous day, and noted no official police or hospital response to these specific allegations had been reported. #SonamWangchuk
