He said this: If we want the Sheep industry to stay relevant, we need to take the hard out of hard work". After we put out the story, one first-gen Sheep Farmer wrote in and said this: "When we started, we could see Farmers doing things the hard way, and we were determined to make life easier for ourselves and the Sheep by improving all the shitty jobs and the hard work things". That's been our focus, and now working Sheep is a pleasure. This got me thinking about first-gen Farmers; they are less privy to the past and therefore have much less baggage to carry. The best Farmers will seek out people who think differently about things. The first-gen Farmers are worth tapping into for that very reason. Jack is a 2nd-generation Farmer, and his old man, Nick, brought the first Wagyu to Australia. Another first was that they invented the Wagyu over Holstein F1 cross and recently tagged calf number 100,000. Their whole-of-supply chain system is impressive and unique. We study what the best Farmers do - Is the future a customised one? I keep coming across young people in Agriculture who are building business tools for their own use using AI. The sample size is only a handful, but it’s what they are doing that might be a pointer as to what might happen in the future. Could AI’s legacy be that it allows us to build things that are useful to us? Could AI kill the off-the-shelf, made-for-all software that we know and use today? When you customise something, it usually means that you are using it to its peak capacity. Why? Because it knows your systems and what you do. Off-the-shelf software has missing bits. You know the community you have when you don't have a fully blown community. To be a true blue online community, you get full access to each other and can interact. That's pretty full on, and not for everyone. The Clayton's community is one where you get access to each other via the platform only. I think that’s important, as for busy people like yourselves, that’s enough. We are lucky enough to get great feedback from the stories we write, the information we aggregate and the podcasts we do. We study what the best Farmers do - Include the locals in the energy assets. Data Centres are coming to a postcode near you. These things are needed as the computing world grows exponentially on the back of AI. It’s been proven that renewable energy projects on good Farming Land is not smart business. It’s food, fibre and fuel country. Most landholders hate it and don’t want to have anything to do with these projects. They fight them, and we support them. But what if the Data Centre industry went about it differently? What if the Data Centre industry made all the locals shareholders? What if they gave them all skin in the game? They make a fortune, these guys. I know our Amazon Web Services invoice for Farm Tender is $5k a month. If Data Centres want to set up in Rural areas, they have to go about it differently. They have to share the spoils with the entire postcode, not just the landholder. We wrote about how they coexist in our newsletter today. The best Farmers think of how a deal can be a win with the person they are dealing with, not just a win for them. Data Centre owners need to think this way too. We did a podcast with Lachlan Monsborough from Rabobank, and we went deep on the Chinese Machinery market and their ambitions to infiltrate products into the major Ag countries around the world. They intend to pick a fight with the John Deeres of the world to challenge their dominance and give Farmers options. And it’s options we're after. I don’t know a single Farmer who has reservations about the price of new Machinery and how much of an effect it's having on their bottom line. Lachlan compared what's ahead to the BYD phenomenon, noting how they have grown in popularity here in such a short time with such a compelling offering. He said that in 10 years, Chinese Machinery will be mainstream. Current Dealers have ties to the brands we know and buy today, but who in the Machinery industry is going to ride the coattails of this trend and see it grow? Farming needs options, and the best Farmers are always looking how to get better. It’s a fascinating interview and a bit of a peek around the corner that's ahead. We study what the best Farmers do - Purposely educating yourself One of our guest columnists, @MichaelBagshaw , said this: “G’day Dwain, this is why I bang on about this topic so much. I have purposely educated myself in this area of law". He shared an article about a Farm succession incident that went awry. Michael is passionate about Agribusiness and things like succession. But it wasn’t that bit that piqued my interest. It was the “purposely educated” bit. The best Farmers we study are purposely educating themselves in something. That’s opposed to just educating yourself. When you are passionate about something, you tend to go deep. Educating yourself is a must, but purposefully educating yourself is taking things to the next level, and that’s when you start moving the needle. What are you purposely educating yourself in? We study what the best Farmers do - Finding your legacy or purpose David Senra founded the Founders podcast. He started studying the great entrepreneurs of yesteryear and aggregates the best parts into a podcast, and we get to listen and learn. I read an article on him over the weekend. He has found his legacy or purpose in life, and he doesn’t want to do anything else until the day he dies. Read the article here. Some of us find our legacy, and some don’t. It's basically doing what you want to do, and it can also be something that improves other people's lives. David does that. You can earn an income from your legacy project, but you don’t have to. I know I found my legacy/purpose at 54 years of age; it is writing and aggregating information for the Ag space through The Farmers Club Newsletter. I love it and want to do it until the day I die. We study what the best Farmers do - Know more than next door To stand out in the Ag space, you have to be a little bit cheeky, different or out there. We learnt this by studying Dan Schultz’s marketing wisdom. Farmers and Agri business people are very competitive. They might say they aren’t, but let me tell you that they are. We have started using the slogan: “Know more than next door”. This is a play on the competitive nature of Farmers and how they compete with the Farmers around them. It’s our cheeky way of saying, subscribe to our newsletter, and you will have that advantage. We think our content is pretty good, but we know you don’t really give a stuff about the content we serve up. You only give a stuff if it’s valuable to you or your business. We study what the best Farmers do - Replicating the Shepherd Wayne Perkins from Perkinz, the Sheep handling Equipment company, said this about Virtual Fencing (VF) for Sheep: “We have to think about having 1 piece of Equipment to contain 100 Sheep rather than 100 bits of Equipment to contain 100 Sheep”. This got me thinking. They are doing Collars for Cattle; let’s use Wayne’s theory and rethink how we can do it for Sheep. I came up with this: VF for Sheep could involve using humanoids or robots that rotate around the mob. Perhaps there are, say, six or ten of them who are constantly rotating around, and the Sheep are trained not to go outside their track or perimeter. This means you have 6/10 pieces of Equipment containing, say, a mob of 500 or more. It would replicate the Shepherd days, or it could be like 6/10 people riding around on horses making sure they are kept in a confined space. Perhaps it’s that simple. Is it that simple? We study what the best Farmers do - Thinking about Virtual Fencing differently. What did we learn on day 3 of LambEx? Heaps. Wayne Perkins from Perkinz, the Sheep Handling Equipment company, is looking to automate the process of pushing Sheep up a race. He’s calling it “Z Vision Move”. It's interesting Wayne also said something profound about Virtual Fencing (VF). He said this: “We have to think about having 1 piece of Equipment to contain 100 Sheep rather than 100 bits of Equipment to contain 100 Sheep". On the back of that, I have come up with how VF can work with Sheep. I will relay tomorrow. The best Farmers are constantly thinking about ways to break their current model. We study what the best Farmers do - Breeders hold all the Sheep industry aces What did we learn on Day 2 of @LambExAU? Sheep Farmers have somewhat overinvested in Feedlotting infrastructure (at this point), according to one industry expert. But, he still says that Lamb Feedlotting is a growing space. Because finishers and restockers are finding it hard to source Lambs, breeders hold all the aces. They can now dictate the terms and use their newfound muscle to line their own pockets. Play the game wisely. Wool activewear company Icebreaker has hit it big in China, and has plans to open 100 new Icebreaker stores in the foreseeable future. We study what the best Farmers do - When the industry vibe is electric We are currently at LambEx. We have a site in the Trade Hall area (site 24). We would love you to visit. The Tuesday arvo session had a real vibe about it, and when the beers came out it went up a notch. It was electric. It was something unique that you don’t really experience at an industry conference. The last time I only ever experienced it was at Beef 24 in Rockhampton. There are a lot of the very best Sheep Farmers in the room. It will be interesting to see what the next 2 days bring.
