One of the most significant parts of the EU's new livestock strategy is its commitment to introducing "reciprocal" animal welfare standards for imported animal products. In simple terms, if European farmers are required to meet certain animal welfare standards, imported products sold into the EU will increasingly be expected to meet comparable standards too. That's exactly what many of us have been calling for in New Zealand.
Europe is recognising what farmers have been saying for years: food security, profitable farms and environmental stewardship go hand in hand. Good to see greater focus on supporting farmers and expecting imports to meet comparable standards.
