The hardest part was being released and losing the dream I’d worked for my whole life. But on top of that, no one came to check on me. No phone call. No message. No one asking if I was okay. Thankfully, I came out the other side. Thank God. But how many young men don’t? And to every young player who’s been released: don’t be embarrassed. You’re not alone. There are thousands of us navigating life after football, trying to find our way and figure out what’s next. The aftercare system is a disappointment. Too many players are treated like numbers rather than human beings. When they’re released, they’re often left to deal with the emotional and mental impact alone. Something has to change.

For every young player in non-league with an opportunity to step up a level or 2. if you believe you’re ready, take the jump. Just understand you’re going in as the underdog. Embrace it. Work harder, show you belong, and prove how much you want it. If it doesn’t work out, that’s not failure. You’ve gained experience, tested yourself at a higher level, and now you know exactly what it takes to go again. Back yourself.

Young players, take your ego out of the equation. There is no shame in playing at a level where you can dominate, build confidence, and play every week before stepping higher. The real mistake is chasing a level you’re not ready for, sitting on the bench, and wasting valuable games and development. Football doesn’t care about what level you’re at. It cares about what you’re doing when you’re there. Play. Improve. Dominate. Then move up.

Any young player going into non-league on loan from the professional game or after being newly released: Don’t come down and fit in. Come in and show why you were where you were. Raise the standard every day. Train harder, think quicker, compete harder. Make people look at you and say, “He shouldn’t be playing at this level.” Your environment changed. Your standards shouldn’t.

Go where you’re wanted and valued. That’s my advice to any non-league player. Don’t choose a club just because the name, level, or league sounds good when you say it out loud. Choose the place where you’re trusted, appreciated, and given the chance to play. A season is too important to waste.
