For years, fraudsters have registered domains impersonating global brands -- bogus Amazon shopping sites, fake McDonald's franchise offers, phony Microsoft support pages -- to con ordinary people. Dozens of companies took them to court. 🌍 What happened in December 2025? a Delhi judge cracked down. She blocked more than 1,100 fraudulent sites. But she didn't stop there. She wrote sweeping new rules for the entire domain industry: strip away privacy protection by default, hand over website owners' details within 72 hours to anyone claiming a "legitimate interest," and block any web address resembling a protected brand. 🌍 The big news now: Now GoDaddy -- which runs 80 million domains worldwide -- is fighting back in thousands of pages of court filings my colleagues and I reviewed . Its warning is striking: the rules would make the internet less safe, not more. They'd expose ordinary website owners to stalking and harassment. And because domain systems are global, an order from one Delhi courtroom could ripple across the entire web -- potentially forcing GoDaddy to "exit India" altogether. 🌍 They are colourful filings: One of GoDaddy's arguments? That you can't ban the word "McDonald" -- it's a Scottish surname meaning "son of the world ruler."
