Today, I had the privilege of delivering a presentation at the 4th Annual Global First Partners Academy 2026, where I shared the journey of Sierra Leone’s Hands Off Our Girls Campaign and the lessons it offers for advancing national initiatives in complex environments. My presentation explored how advocacy can evolve into national policy through strategic leadership, strong partnerships, and an unwavering commitment to reform. I reflected on the importance of building coalitions, navigating challenges, leveraging the unique platform of a First Partner, and transforming a campaign into lasting legislative and institutional change. I am deeply humbled that the presentation was so well received. The engaging discussions that followed reaffirmed that while our contexts may differ, our shared commitment to protecting women and children, expanding opportunities for girls, and driving meaningful social change unites us all. As President of OAFLAD, I remain committed to sharing Africa’s experiences, learning from fellow First Partners around the world, and strengthening the collective leadership needed to create lasting impact. Together, we can turn compassion into action, and action into sustainable change. FMB.
When First Ladies and First Gentlemen come together, it is a powerful reminder that leadership is not only exercised through elected office but also through service, compassion, and influence. We are often described as the invisible other half—expected to comfort, inspire, advocate, and sometimes solve challenges that fall outside our formal mandate. Yet, we continue to show up because we understand that true leadership is measured not only by authority, but by impact. Together, we are proving that soft power is not weak power. It is the power to unite, to influence, to uplift, and to create lasting change for those who need us most. FMB
Today, I had the privilege of joining fellow First Partners from across the world for the opening of the Global First Partners Academy—an important platform that reminds us that true leadership is not always measured by authority, but by influence, compassion, and the ability to inspire change. As President of the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), it is incumbent upon me not only to stand in solidarity with my fellow African First Ladies but also to lead by example. Our presence here is a reaffirmation of our shared commitment to learning, growing, and strengthening the impact we make in the lives of those we serve. The discussions on the power of soft leadership reinforce an important truth: our voices, our advocacy, our empathy, and our ability to convene partners are among the most powerful tools we possess. When used with purpose and integrity, soft power becomes a force that transforms policies, changes mindsets, and creates lasting opportunities for women, children, and communities. I extend my sincere appreciation to the organizers of the Global First Partners Academy and to all the partners whose vision, collaboration, and unwavering support have made this important initiative possible. Together, we are building a global network of leaders committed to using influence not for privilege, but for progress. The journey has just begun, and I look forward to the lessons, partnerships, and collective action that will emerge from this Academy as we continue working toward a more just, inclusive, and equitable world. FMB.
I have arrived safely in New York ahead of a series of important international engagements. Upon my arrival at John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport, I was warmly received by the Deputy Permanent Representative for Political Affairs at the Permanent Mission of Sierra Leone to the United Nations, Ambassador Ibrahim Kalilu Totangi; the Minister Plenipotentiary and Head of Chancery, Mr. Sulay Manah Kpukumu; and members of the Mission staff. During my stay, I will participate in the 3rd Global First Partners Academy, a distinguished executive leadership programme for First Ladies and Gentlemen from around the world. I also look forward to a number of high-level engagements within the United Nations system. I remain committed to advancing the interests of Sierra Leone, promoting the empowerment of women and girls, and strengthening global partnerships that contribute to sustainable development. Stay tuned for more updates from my engagements in New York. FMB.
Today, I had the distinct honor of serving as the keynote speaker at the 5th Edition of the International Women Leaders Forum, held at the Palais du Luxembourg, Salle Clemenceau, Paris. Under the theme, “Women’s Excellence in Education and Female Entrepreneurship,” I spoke about the inseparable link between education and entrepreneurship. Education empowers women with knowledge, while entrepreneurship gives them the opportunity to transform that knowledge into economic independence, innovation, and leadership. I emphasized that denying a girl her right to education is denying a nation its future. Every educated girl has the potential to become a leader, entrepreneur, scientist, or even President. Investing in girls’ education is one of the most powerful investments any country can make. I was proud to highlight Sierra Leone’s Hands Off Our Girls campaign, launched in 2018 under the leadership of His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio. The campaign continues to make significant progress in tackling gender-based violence, reducing child marriage, and improving girls’ access to education. While women across the world are driving innovation and creating opportunities, many still face barriers to finance, technology, markets, and mentorship. We must continue to equip girls with quality education, digital and financial skills, and create pathways for women entrepreneurs to thrive. I concluded by calling on leaders to build a future where every girl completes her education, every woman with a business idea has access to opportunity, and leadership is defined by competence and character—not gender. May this Forum be remembered not only as a gathering of remarkable women, but as a catalyst for meaningful action. FMB
Alhamdulillah, I have safely arrived at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport to attend the 5th Edition of the International Women Leaders Forum. This high-level event, organized by Institut AFRIKA, brings together women leaders, ministers, parliamentarians, entrepreneurs, and other distinguished participants from across the world. The Forum seeks to advance the global conversation on gender equality under the theme: “Women’s Excellence in Education and Female Entrepreneurship.” Upon my arrival, I was warmly received by Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to France and members of the Embassy delegation. I look forward to engaging with fellow leaders, sharing Sierra Leone’s experiences, and contributing to meaningful discussions that will empower women and girls across Africa and beyond. FMB
Today, I received a cross-section of Marrah Babes, a women’s organization in the Sierra Leone People’s Party, who paid a courtesy visit to my Goderich office in Freetown. The visit comes shortly after the launch of the organization a few days ago at the Approved School Field in the eastern part of Freetown. Our discussion focused on how we, as women, can support each other and contribute to the growth of the Party. FMB.
Thank you Bo District, I am truly grateful for your love and support. FMB EBEMA GBI CEO
My husband and I joined members of the opposition All People’s Congress Party to pay our last respects to the late Hon. Alhaji Minkailu Mansaray, the former National Chairman of the All People’s Congress Party, at his lying-in-state Ceremony, held in the country’s Well of Parliament. Hon. Minkailu was once an opposition stalwart who contributed immensely not only to his party but to the country at large. Our show of solidarity is a clear manifestation that, despite our different tribes, regions, religions, and political affiliations, we remain united by the fact that we are one country, one people. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace. May God bless Sierra Leone. FMB.
Today, the women of Bo spoke with one voice: “We Are Fatima.” “Fatima Is Our Voice.” As First Lady, I have dedicated myself to serving the women and children of our nation. Whenever they feel that our shared vision and progress are threatened, they respond with unwavering unity and determination. Today, they showed the world exactly where they stand. Nothing will move them from their position because this is more than support—it is a bond built on service, trust, and a common purpose. To the women of Bo, thank you. I am deeply grateful for your love, loyalty, and continued support. EBEMA GBI. FMB.
As part of my husband’s commitment to improving infrastructure, agriculture, and rural connectivity, I joined him and the people of Kailahun District to officially commission the Manowa Bridge. Kailahun District is one of the most productive agricultural districts. However, it has suffered significant agricultural losses over the years due to poor road conditions. The construction of this bridge will improve access to markets, reduce post-harvest losses, and strengthen trade across the district and beyond. FMB.
This is how we bring the curtain down in East Urban of Freetown.
From the Freetown International Conference Centre, I went straight to join members of the Sierra Leone film industry to officially launch the Sierra Leone Film Industry Labour and Marketing Guild (SL FILM GUILD) National Strategic Development Plan 2026–2030 at the Miatta Conference Centre. As a former actress, scriptwriter, and storyteller, I understand the importance of this sector to individuals and to the nation’s economy. I also understand the challenges that arise when talent is abundant but opportunities are limited, including structural issues, coordination, and professional standards. But with persistence, education, coordination, and hard work, we can create a pathway for sustainable growth. To policymakers and development partners, I urge you to invest in this sector and create opportunities for young people in the film industry. To filmmakers, I implore you to produce scripts that tell stories about our history and cultural heritage, stories about African women and youth, and stories that build the future of our country. Keep believing in your dreams and don’t allow others to tell our stories. Together, we can build an industry that creates employment and drives growth. Going forward, I am committed to fully supporting the best script from filmmakers a script that tells our own stories. FMB.
Following my engagement with staff from Statistics Sierra Leone at the Presidential Lodge, I joined the Ministry of Youth Affairs to officially launch the Youth Connekt: Mano River Union Youth Forum 2026 at the Freetown International Conference Centre. The event drew youth leaders, policymakers, UN representatives, the Mano River Union Secretary General, and government officials to discuss the future of young people across the Mano River Union countries. For me, this event was not just about the launch. It was a reminder that young women deserve the utmost attention and fair access to leadership opportunities. When young women lead and are empowered, economies grow and nations progress. When you educate a man, you educate an individual. When you educate a woman, you educate a nation. More than 60% of our population are young people who face numerous challenges, ranging from unemployment, conflict, and instability. Young women face even greater challenges, such as barriers to education, financial opportunities, and investment in their potential. I will also use this opportunity to lend my voice to advocating for the inclusion of women in all walks of life. We are drivers of development and we require access to networks. Let us join hands to nurture a new generation of women a generation where women take the mantle of leadership and contribute to nation building. To my women, you are not leaders of tomorrow, you are leaders of today. Dream without limits and live beyond expectations. We stand with you. Your government stands with you. Your First Lady stands with you. Africa stands with you. Let us envision a region where women are architects of development. FMB.
Earlier this morning, my husband His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio and I received staff from Statistics Sierra Leone to conduct the cartographic mapping exercise at the Presidential Lodge. This process ensures equitable resource distribution, drives targeted healthcare and education planning, and guarantees a successful, inclusive national census. FMB.
Thank you East Urban.
This afternoon at the Approved School Field in the eastern part of Freetown, I had the privilege of joining Chairman Marrah and the women of the Sierra Leone People’s Party for the launch of Marrah Babes, a vibrant organization established to strengthen the participation and voice of women within our party. The atmosphere was inspiring, as thousands of supporters gathered in a remarkable display of unity, commitment, and love for our party and country. The event was a powerful reminder that the strength of any movement lies in its connection to the grassroots and the people it serves. During my engagement with the women, I reaffirmed my commitment to the table banking initiative for market women. This project is designed to provide direct, interest-free financial support, helping hardworking women grow their businesses and improve their livelihoods without the burden of high-interest loans. What touched me most was the overwhelming presence of women from all walks of life. Their energy, resilience, and determination continue to inspire me and reinforce my belief that empowering women is essential to building stronger families, communities, and a more prosperous Sierra Leone. I remain deeply committed to serving our people, listening to their concerns, and working alongside them to create opportunities that improve lives and advance our nation’s development. FMB
As I graduate with a Master’s of Public Health (MHA) in Public Health Administration from UCLA, I reflect on the sacrifices made, the love shared, and the unwavering support of family and friends throughout this journey. To my darling husband, Julius, thank you for your constant support and dedication. Thank you for the late nights before I could finally come to bed, for postponing events so I could attend lectures, for rescheduling flights so I would never miss a class, and for sitting with me late into the night so I could finish my homework, you never complain or left me to feel alone. Your commitment over the past two years has been extraordinary, and your belief in me has made this achievement possible. You know I love you endlessly. To my children—Natoma, Mohamed, Tigda, Amina, Fanta, Nyava, and Mohammed Munda—thank you for your love, patience, and support. Thank you for sharing me with the world and allowing me the time and space to pursue this dream. To my parents, I am forever grateful. You have always been my source of comfort, strength, and encouragement. Your prayers have carried me through every challenge and continue to guide me every day. To my political family, SLPP/EBEMA, thank you for your support and encouragement throughout this journey. To my dear sister Dr. Jennifer Wortham, thank you for helping make this dream a reality. You were my compass throughout this entire journey. Thank you for believing in my ability to grow, learn, and succeed. As this chapter closes, I look forward to asking: what’s next? To my UCLA family, it has been a privilege knowing and learning alongside you over the past two years. Whether in class, on Zoom, during immersions, field trips, or group projects, I treasured every moment we shared. Laura and Jenna, thank you for not only being my supervisors but also for guiding and supporting me every step of the way. To my Sierra Leonean family—whether from my party, the SLPP, or from the opposition—thank you for making me stronger than I ever imagined possible. Your love, support, and even your criticism have helped shape me into a better version of myself. For that, I am deeply grateful. To Mama Africa, I hope this daughter of yours continues to make you proud and inspires many others to keep their dreams alive and never give up on their aspirations. To everyone who has been part of this journey, thank you. This achievement belongs not only to me but to all of you who believed in me, supported me, and walked alongside me. With gratitude and love, Fatima Maada Bio.
It was truly an honor to be celebrated in Hollywood last night. My dear sisters, Daphna and Judy, organized an unforgettable all-star event in the hills of Hollywood to celebrate my graduation. I was deeply humbled by the presence of distinguished guests, including my dear sister, Karen Bass, Mayor of Los Angeles; the Governor of California; leaders involved in the California Olympics; as well as renowned actors, actresses, and music stars. The evening was made even more special by an unforgettable performance from Sierra Leonean Hollywood superstar Duane, the lead performer in the Broadway production of Femi Kuti, whose talent and artistry captivated everyone in attendance. Thank you all for your warm hospitality, unwavering support, and continued trust in me. Your kindness and encouragement made this milestone even more meaningful. I am sincerely grateful and honored by this remarkable celebration. May God continue to bless you all abundantly. FMB
