Today, as our nation celebrates 250 years of independence, Norfolk International Airport proudly joins the commemoration of America250 and Virginia250. In June, employees of ORF and our business partners supported @SetonYouth85 through a donation drive. This generosity resulted in the collection of more than 150 essential items including deodorant, paper cups, disinfecting wipes, tissues, toilet paper, plus other necessities. During today's pick up, Director of Community Partnerships Michelle Broad shared details of Seton Youth Services' history and mission with members of ORF's team. Seton Youth Service is a licensed Safe Place agency serving our region, providing a safe haven and critical support for runaway, homeless, crisis-impacted and at-risk youth, including LGBTQ+ youth who may be experiencing challenges within their family, school or community. A heartfelt thank you to the ORF team for demonstrating the power of community and compassion.

Here's some trivia knowledge for you: ✨👐✨ Picture it, 1994: Back in the days of noisy dial-up, slow connections and less than 3,000 websites worldwide, ORF paved the way as the FIRST airport with an internet presence. Yes, we had the first airport website, no big deal 😏💅 While we were creating the site, we conducted an exhaustive global WebCrawler search (Google didn't exist) and finding no other airport with an online presence, we committed to being the first to launch. Back then, the Internet was referred to as the Information Superhighway leading us to lightheartedly dub ours the "Information Superrunway". Because the domain name registration business was not yet developed, we launched as a subfolder on the lnfiNet server at infi.net/ORF. NCSA Mosaic, the first graphical web browser, was the preferred browser at the time because neither Netscape Navigator nor Internet Explorer had yet been released. After launching, we received an email from an executive at Northwest Airlines asking if we really thought this Internet thing would work! 😁 #TheMoreYouKnow

A) When airlines are staffed correctly for their ground operations, baggage delivery moves quickly. That's just a fact. B) The airport has proposed new infrastructure to move checked baggage from aircraft to baggage claim mechanically, but the airlines have so far determined the benefit is not worth their added costs to build that system. (Airlines have a say in and ultimately help pay for airports' capital expenditures.) C) Moving walkways aren't a necessity. We've reinstalled them as a convenience after new technologies were identified and funding became available. Keep in mind, every penny we spend comes from the costs customers pay for services such as parking fees or food & beverage sales. We don't just throw money around unnecessarily as that will drive up costs to travelers.

Placing the baggage claim/arrivals terminal farther away from gates years ago does create a distance issue for bag delivery but that by no means prevents timely service if the airlines are staffed correctly. If the building design was the true problem alone, no one would ever get their bags quickly, and that isn't the case. As for the moving walkways, the older ones were outdated and couldn't be maintained because replacement parts were difficult or impossible to obtain. Suggesting they shouldn't have been ripped out is akin to saying someone should have held onto that '92 Suzuki Samurai because it was a good car 30 years ago. We've got new ones now so hopefully you'll enjoy their presence.

Look, we LOVE a good celebration! But let's try to avoid the awkwardness, okay? 🎆 NO fireworks in carry-on or checked bags (but please feel free to sing your heart out 🎶)
