To all those travel and border “experts” who say the only way Brits can avoid the queues at EU ports and airports is to rejoin the EU or find some way of getting an EU passport - please note. Many EU countries (including Portugal when I have just been) have made great strides in improving the technology to make passport control simple and efficient for British visitors. Banks of kiosks with multiple simple language options offer a simple touch screen solution to scan passports live images and fingers with a few simple questions and then it’s straight through an e gate and into the baggage hall. Of course not all member states are completely up to speed yet but they are making great progress. You don’t need to be in the EU to have a safe efficient and simple border experience. You just need to invest in the right technology, people and infrastructure. @TheMercianNews Increasing IE resources alone won’t help without removing barriers to removal, I’m afraid. The Blair government trebled the Home Office budget in 2002 to speed up FAS removals - but many still got to stay due to legal challenges and lack of returns deals. Focus on that imo.
🇬🇷 Greece has approved new legislation to speed up the deportation of rejected asylum seekers and pave the way for transferring them to “return hubs” outside the EU once agreements with third countries are finalized. The law comes as migrant arrivals continue to rise on the Greek islands of Crete and Gavdos, with many boats arriving from Libya. Greece is already in talks with two African countries as part of a broader effort involving the Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, and Austria to establish return hubs that could become operational in 2027.
