Hey video game analysts… We need to see global numbers on physical games. We need to see data on consumers not being able to find sold out games in stores and deciding that digital is the only way to play something new. We need to see a comparative analysis across different consoles and different generations. We need to see data on whether companies have been printing less and less physical media in an effort to speed up this change to digital. We need to see pricing data for physical games and digital games over a multi-year period. We need to see data on the collector/resale/cultural value of physical vs digital media over time. We need to see data on the public awareness for games that physical retail provides. We need to see data on holiday gift shopping for new physical media. We need to see data on the losses to businesses, collectors, conventions, the game playing audience and the public discourse around games that the end of physical games will create. And then if the consensus is that physical games are over, we should see a plan that allows players to truly own (back up, gift, share, sell and play forever) the digital games they buy.

The game industry spent its first 40 years growing (with bumps) training players how to consume, collect and enjoy videogames. It has since spent the last decade or so changing all the rules and making things very confusing for its most loyal and long term fans. I think all of this “progress” has twisted the entire modern medium into some pretty perilous positions. We are seeing the ramifications of some of these major business decisions play out in real time. I don’t understand. Killing physical media for videogames is equivalent to movie studios killing theatrical releases. It’s not just the sale of the media, it’s the IRL bump in awareness and cultural value that these products get at retail and by people seeing these brands in the real world. Game biz should stop just counting beans and start counting its lucky stars that so many people care.

Happy birthday to John Stinsman—the artist on the very first book I ever wrote. Back when I had no idea what I was doing and was just trying to figure out how to tell a story in comics, John was the one actually bringing it to life on the page. That first project turned into Lady Pendragon, and seeing those characters exist because someone else could draw the hell out of them… that’s a feeling that never really leaves you. It’s easy to forget how much trust that takes early on—someone buying into your ideas enough to spend hours making them real. John did that from day one, and it made all the difference. So yeah—happy birthday, man. Thanks for helping turn that first swing into something real.

When I was in Calgary, a lot of people thanked me for speaking openly about how I feel regarding what’s happening in our government and our country. They told me it helped them realize they weren’t alone, and that not all of us fit the image that those in power want the rest of the world to believe. I explained that my page is simply where I share my thoughts. I have the right to disagree, to defend my views, and to say whatever I choose on my own page. If someone doesn’t like that, they’re free not to follow me. And if they don’t believe in respectful conversation, they can argue somewhere else ,because if someone comments without basic manners, I just block them. It’s not complicated. I think it’s important to stand up against things you don’t believe in. It’s equally important to accept that sometimes you might stand alone ... but your feelings are still valid. Freedom of speech means you have the right to express what you believe. Just understand that while here on my page- you are a guest.
