The most respected sin in the modern church isn’t porn. It’s unthankfulness. Not the screaming fist at heaven. The quiet, church-going kind. Bible in your hand. Hymns on your lips. And a heart that mutters, “God, You owe me better than this.” We don’t call it sin. We call it: “I’m just being real.” “I’m processing.” “I’m venting.” “I’m burned out.” We write essays about our “season” and never once say the word unthankful. God does. “When they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.” — Romans 1:21 They knew Him. They stopped glorifying Him. They stopped being thankful. Then their mind went dark. Apostasy doesn’t start with burning a Bible. It starts with a cold heart that refuses to say “thank You” anymore. You were not born grateful. You were born a grumbler. “Do all things without murmurings and disputings:” — Philippians 2:14 You don’t have to teach a man to complain. He’s fluent from birth. You have to teach him to rejoice in hope when everything hurts. You have to teach him to keep praying when God feels silent. You have to teach him to give thanks when nothing in him wants to. If you refuse that school, don’t be shocked when your “faith” rots long before your theology does. Your days can be sorrow. Ecclesiastes said it straight: “For all his days are sorrows, and his travail grief; yea, his heart taketh not rest in the night.” God didn’t respond with, “If you had more faith, you’d sleep.” He responded with this: “Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks…” — 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 All his days are sorrows. Heart doesn’t rest. And right in the middle: Rejoice. Pray. Give thanks. Not when it gets easier. In it. Worry is just prayer to your fear. Philippians 4:6 isn’t a coffee mug. It’s a rebuke. “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” “Careful” = eaten up with care. You feel the weight. Fine. The question is what you do next. Hug it and rehearse it? Or hurl it and thank Him anyway? “Cast thy burden upon the LORD…” “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” You are not commanded to pet your burden. You are commanded to throw it. Most of what passes for “honest processing” in church is just sanctified grumbling. God calls it darkness. “…unthankful, unholy…” — 2 Timothy 3:2 If your joy only works when life is easy, it’s not Christian joy. If your mouth never learns to say “thank You” in the dark, don’t be surprised when your heart slowly walks away from the light. You want to stay sane in a collapsing world? Stop treating unthankfulness like a personality. Start treating it like a sin. Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks. Not because the pain is good. Because He is, even when it’s killing you.
