Yesterday I went shopping at one such store and the lady checking receipts at the exit was stopping everyone. I didn't choose to participate in that nonsense, I had already filled my trolly, emptied my trolly and scanned the items, refilled my trolly and so I just skipped the exit line and left. I heard her saying "Umm - Excuse me “ as I kept walking and raised the receipt above my head, leaving the store. You can either trust me to do self-checkout, or you can put your cashiers back in place like it used to be. • I'm not interested in proving that I did your job for you. • If you want me to be a cashier with no training then that's your problem not mine. • Keep employing young people and give them job opportunities. YOU DON'T PAY ME TO SCAN MY OWN SHOPPING. YOU DON’T GIVE ME STAFF DISCOUNT FOR WORKING FOR YOU. ‼️The objection deadline for Auchtertool (26/01243/PPP) has now passed. ‼️Fife Council has referred the EIA screening question to Scottish Government. ‼️There have been over 1,200 planning portal comments, 2,500 signatures on a national moratorium petition, and 8,000 against this site specifically. ‼️There is a scale problem here. ‼️ILI Cato’s own Energy Statement of Intention puts eventual site usage at 4,000GWh/year. ‼️That is ~7.7% of all electricity generated in Scotland in 2024 for one 600MW campus. ‼️There is a policy gap underneath this. ‼️NPF4’s ND12 “green data centre” designation has no enforceable definition (confirmed via parliamentary question S6W-41362). ‼️There is a real risk Fife Council determines this application before that gap is closed. ‼️There has been no commitment from government. On a darkening moor in the Scottish Borders, an English army marched straight into the setting sun, and the sun helped to kill them. The year was 1545, and Scotland was bleeding through a brutal time known as the Rough Wooing. King Henry the Eighth of England wanted the infant Mary Queen of Scots married to his son, and when the Scots refused, he tried to force the match with fire and sword. English armies burned Edinburgh, sacked the abbeys of the Borders, and put the countryside to the torch. At Ancrum Moor, near Jedburgh, the Scots finally turned. Led by Archibald Douglas, Earl of Angus, whose own family tombs had been desecrated by the invaders, and joined by the hardy Border riders of Scott of Buccleuch, they laid a clever trap. They fell back over the crest of a hill as if in retreat, drawing the English cavalry on in a ragged charge. Then the Scots turned and stood, a hedge of long spears, with the low evening sun and the smoke of their own guns full in the enemies faces. The English, blinded and blundering, crashed into that wall of steel and broke. In the chaos even some English allied Borderers tore off their red crosses and turned on their former masters. It became a rout. Hundreds fell on that moor, and for one bloody evening the invaders learned that Scotland would not be wooed at the point of a sword. Ancrum Moor did not end the war. The suffering of the Borders went on for years. But it proved something the Scots needed to believe, that they could still stand, still fight, still win on their own ground. If your people came from the Border country, that hard land between two nations, they lived on a frontier burned and rebuilt more times than anyone could count. The rarest thing on Clarkson's Farm is not the Lamborghini tractor. It is Kaleb Cooper. A young man, genuinely young, who wanted to farm and does. Who runs the place, knows the ground, drives the machinery he was raised around, and has built an entire working life on a farm before the age most people have chosen a career. On screen he is comic relief, the exasperated professional rolling his eyes at Clarkson. Step back and he is the single most valuable and most endangered thing in British agriculture, and the show never quite says so. Because here is what Kaleb actually represents. The average British farmer is past sixty. In America it is 58 and climbing, with the over-65s now the largest group by far. Right across the developed world the story is identical: the people who grow the food are ageing out, and almost nobody young is coming in behind them. Not because the young do not want to. Because the door has been bricked up. Work out what it takes for a young person to farm today. You need land, and farmland costs a fortune precisely because it is a tax shelter rather than a business, so it is priced out of reach of anyone who actually intends to earn from it. You need capital for machinery that runs to six figures a unit. You need to survive years of thin or negative margins with no cushion. And you need to accept that the reward for clearing all three hurdles is the £144 profit the whole country watched Clarkson find. So the miracle is not that farming is short of young people. The miracle is that Kaleb exists at all. He came into it, stuck at it, and made it work, and the reason a few million people know his name is that a television programme happened to point a camera at him. For every Kaleb on screen there are a thousand villages that no longer have one, where the young left because the maths told them to, and the farm went to the retiring neighbour who was already too big, and the land got a little more consolidated, and the countryside got a little older. Kaleb barely wants to leave the county, let alone the country. When the show finally took him abroad it was an event. And that rootedness, the sheer unfashionable determination to stay put and do one hard thing well, is precisely the trait the entire food system depends on and has spent fifty years making financially irrational. The old farmers are retiring. The young ones were priced out before they started. We are down to hoping enough Kalebs turn up by accident, because we built a country where choosing to feed people on purpose is the wrong financial decision.
