Did you know?
The Animal Welfare Fund supports some of the world's most effective animal charities.
Most crypto users have never heard of it.
Maybe that should change.
For anyone just discovering the AWF story, here's what happened:
@VitalikButerin donated 64 ETH to the Animal Welfare Fund because he believes animal welfare deserves more attention.
A community created an Ethereum token called $AWF with a simple mechanism: Every buy and sell
Another 2.38 ETH has just been withdrawn by @EffectvAltruism — the latest movement. But for the AWF community, the same question remains unanswered: where did the funds go, and what are they being used for?
Over 1,700 members across 100+ countries have supported this initiative. Through the $AWF contract, 2% of every transaction is automatically contributed, aligned with @VitalikButerin’s vision of effective altruism. To date, nearly 290 ETH has been donated.
We genuinely respect EA’s efforts in reducing animal suffering — improving conditions for pigs, chickens, and countless vulnerable lives. That work deserves recognition.
But so does the community behind these contributions.
Right now, there is no transparency, no clear reporting, and not even a simple acknowledgment. As a result, trust is fading, members are leaving, and donations are declining.
And yet, many are still here. Still waiting.
Maybe the AWF community never asked for much — just a single confirmation, a simple “thank you,” a sign that their actions truly mattered.
@VitalikButerin, this model was built on your principles. The contract remains open and visible:

If you could help bring attention to this, even briefly, it could restore confidence and give this effort the clarity it urgently needs.
Because sometimes, what holds everything together isn’t funding — it’s trust.
@Lewis_Bollard
The fascinating part about public goods isn't raising money.
It's sustaining attention.
Money is easy.
Attention is scarce.
Yet somehow this story continues to attract people from all over the world.
That may be the real achievement. 🐾
Some people see a chart.
Some people see a community.
Some people see a case study.
Years from now, I suspect the chart will be forgotten.
The lessons about coordination won't be. 🐾
For decades, philanthropy has largely been top-down.
Large donors.
Large institutions.
Large foundations.
What happens when funding becomes bottom-up?
When thousands of ordinary people participate?
We're beginning to find out. 🐾
@VitalikButerin
Dear @EffectvAltruism team, members of the Effective Altruism community, and all friends who care about blockchain-powered philanthropy:
Inspired by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin’s long-standing advocacy for philanthropic principles — emphasizing evidence-based approaches, transparency, efficiency, and maximizing positive impact — our crypto community came together with great enthusiasm and trust to donate over 280 ETH to Effective Altruism. This contribution stems from our shared belief in the core values of Effective Altruism (EA): using reason and evidence to allocate resources in ways that generate the greatest possible good for the world.
As blockchain practitioners and active participants in public good initiatives, we deeply appreciate blockchain’s unique strength in transparency: every transaction is traceable and verifiable. This is not just a technical feature — it is the foundation of trust. We believe that Effective Altruism, as an organization that champions transparency, accountability, and high-impact giving, will uphold the same standards for every donation, including ours.
However, some time has passed since the donation, and our community has yet to receive any formal acknowledgment, receipt, fund utilization plan, or progress update. This has left us feeling puzzled and concerned. Vitalik has repeatedly highlighted blockchain’s role in philanthropy, including the provision of public audit trails and verifiable impact tracking. We respectfully urge @EffectvAltruism to act in line with these principles by promptly sharing:
• Confirmation of receipt along with the relevant transaction records from the receiving wallet;
• A clear plan for how the funds will be used (e.g., supporting high-impact areas such as longtermism, global health, animal welfare, or other priority causes);
• An expected impact report or milestone timeline;
• Any additional communication channels so the community can continue to follow up.
We understand that large organizations may face administrative or due diligence processes when handling donations. That said, transparency is a cornerstone of effective altruism. A lack of timely response not only erodes donor confidence but also runs counter to EA’s long-promoted values of “open truth-seeking” and collaborative spirit.
Our community consists of individuals who strongly believe in “Crypto for Good.” We have actively supported various blockchain philanthropy projects, including animal welfare initiatives such as AWF. Our donation was made with the sincere intention of advancing EA’s mission, not merely as a transfer of funds. We genuinely call on the @EffectvAltruism team to provide a formal response as soon as possible, so that every satoshi of this contribution can deliver its impact under full sunlight. This is not only a sign of respect to our community but also a powerful example for the entire crypto philanthropy ecosystem.
If any additional information from our side is needed, please feel free to reach out. We remain eager to collaborate and deepen the integration of blockchain technology with effective altruism to create more tangible real-world impact.
Proud crypto community moment for good. ❤️
Let us together put Vitalik’s vision into practice: using technology and reason to make the world a better place.

Dear Vitalik Buterin,
Hello!
As the co-founder of Ethereum, you have long inspired the world through both your actions and public advocacy, bringing rationality, transparency, and efficiency to global philanthropy. Your support for Effective Altruism (EA) and your repeated emphasis on blockchain’s role in providing public audit trails and verifiable impact have deeply motivated our crypto community. Guided by the belief in “Crypto for Good,” we collectively donated over 315 ETH to @EffectvAltruism under the call of your philanthropic ideals — including your donation 64 ETH from [his/your specific contribution]. We hoped this contribution would support high-impact causes such as global health, longtermism, animal welfare, or other priority areas.
However, some time has passed since the donation, and we have not yet received any formal acknowledgment, fund utilization plan, or meaningful progress update from @EffectvAltruism. This stands in contrast to the transparency and accountability you have consistently championed. While we understand that organizations may require processes for handling large donations, timely communication and public records are essential for building lasting trust.
Vitalik, you are not only a pioneer in blockchain technology but also a beacon for crypto philanthropy. Your voice carries unparalleled influence across the ecosystem. We sincerely seek your assistance in the following ways:
1. Help encourage the @EffectvAltruism team to promptly provide donation confirmation, transaction records, and details on fund allocation;
2. Share your valuable insights on best practices for transparency in blockchain philanthropy, so our community can better track and ensure the efficient use of these funds;
3. If appropriate, publicly express your attention to this matter, helping to advance greater transparency and responsibility across the industry in the spirit of “effective altruism.”
Our community consists of curious explorers and technology believers who have actively participated in public good projects, including animal welfare initiatives like AWF, often using NFTs, DAOs, and other tools for transparent giving. Stories like your daughter’s pure-hearted response and art marathon remind us that genuine kindness, combined with technology, can create real change. We do not want this donation — rooted in trust in your vision — to become a disappointment. Instead, we hope it becomes a positive example for blockchain philanthropy.
Proud crypto community moment for good. ❤️
Thank you for taking the time to consider this. We are ready to provide transaction details or any other necessary information at any time. We look forward to your guidance and to working together with you and the EA community toward a better future. Any response or advice from you would mean the world to us.
Best regards,
An Inspired Crypto Philanthropy Community

"Pokemon" is short for "pocket monsters".
"Digimon" is short for "digital monsters".
Therefore, "salmon" is short for "saltwater monsters".
(You might object: salmon spend a big part of their life in freshwater. But pokemon spend a big part of their life outside pockets too!)
Effective Altruism has built its reputation on one thing above all else: credibility.
A movement that claims to do the most good must also hold itself to the highest standards — not just in where funds go, but in how it communicates with those who believed enough to contribute.
The AWF community did not appear out of nowhere.
It was formed following @VitalikButerin’s vision. It mobilized quickly. And it acted — contributing 288 ETH through an address directly associated with EA.
This was not speculation. This was trust, translated into action.
We recognize that due diligence is important. No serious community would argue against that.
But silence is not diligence.
Silence creates doubt.
Silence erodes trust.
Silence contradicts the very principles that made EA worth supporting in the first place.
Right now, the community is not asking for praise.
Not asking for recognition.
Only asking for something far more fundamental:
A response.
Because the longer this goes unanswered, the more difficult it becomes to defend the integrity of the system that brought us here.
People joined because they believed EA was different.
Now they are waiting to see if that belief still holds.
The community is still here.
But patience is not infinite.

What if blockchains are remembered not because they moved money...
but because they enabled new forms of human coordination?
That would be a much bigger story.
And we're only at the beginning. 🐾
@VitalikButerin Ethereum has shown that communities can coordinate around meaningful causes. Inspired by your example, the #AWF community has already donated over **300 ETH** to animal welfare funds.
We'd love to hear your thoughts on initiatives like this. Do you believe it's a safe and effective model for communities to direct donations to established animal welfare funds without managing the funds themselves? It's similar to the "infinite donation" mechanism you once described—where communities continuously contribute while trusted organizations handle the impact.
Your perspective would mean a lot, not only for our community but for encouraging more people to use Ethereum for public good. 🐾💙
Most people will remember the number:
281 ETH.
I think history will remember something else.
The invisible infrastructure that allowed strangers across the world to trust each other enough to act together.
That's harder to measure.
But probably far more valuable. 🐾
animalwelfarefund.xyz
Network effects usually increase value.
This network effect increased generosity.
One person inspired ten.
Ten inspired hundreds.
Hundreds inspired thousands.
281 ETH is just the visible part.
The coordination is the compounding effect. 🐾
For anyone just discovering the AWF story, here's what happened:
@VitalikButerin donated 64 ETH to the Animal Welfare Fund because he believes animal welfare deserves more attention.
A community created an Ethereum token called $AWF with a simple mechanism: Every buy and sell
Open source changed software.
Maybe open communities can change philanthropy.
Nobody owns compassion.
Nobody owns generosity.
But Ethereum might be the best infrastructure we've ever built for scaling both.
That's the experiment we're watching unfold. 🐾
For anyone just discovering the AWF story, here's what happened:
@VitalikButerin donated 64 ETH to the Animal Welfare Fund because he believes animal welfare deserves more attention.
A community created an Ethereum token called $AWF with a simple mechanism: Every buy and sell routes a percentage of trading fees directly to the same Animal Welfare Fund.
Nobody expected what happened next.
People from more than 100 countries joined.
The community kept trading, building, creating, and spreading the story.
Today, more than 281 ETH has been routed toward animal welfare through this community.
No grants. No VC funding. No fundraising campaign.
Just decentralized coordination.
Whether you love meme coins or hate them, this raises an interesting question:
Can Ethereum communities become a new engine for funding public goods?
That's the real story.
The token is simply the mechanism.
The coordination is the innovation.
And the animals are the beneficiaries. 🐾
Sent another 64 ETH to the Animal Welfare Fund.
I encourage others to think and act more in support of our non-human cousins too! The extreme suffering we're imposing on them in the billions is not something we talk about often, but it continues to be one of the larger blights
It all started with @VitalikButerin.
Your words inspired something real — a community built across 100+ countries, nearly 2,000 people, united by one belief: crypto can do good.
We didn’t just talk.
We acted.
288 ETH was donated through the official address associated with this movement.
And that’s where things stopped making sense.
No updates.
No transparency.
No communication from EA.
The same community that stepped forward with trust is now left with questions.
We are not here to accuse.
We are here because we believed — in the vision, in the system, and in the people behind it.
But belief cannot survive in silence.
If this movement truly stands for “doing good,” then accountability must be part of it.
@VitalikButerin — this community exists because of you.
And today, it is looking to you again.
Not for answers you don’t have —
but for attention, for a signal, for help in reconnecting with EA.
Even a small action — a reply, a like, a moment of acknowledgment —
would mean everything to those who chose to trust.
We are still here.
Still committed.
Still willing to carry this forward.
But we cannot do it alone.
Transparency is not a demand.
It’s the foundation of trust.
And right now, that foundation is shaking.
#AWF#Ethereum@ethereumJoseph@Lewis_Bollard@willmacaskill@elonmusk@AWF_ETHCTO#B20
Crypto usually measures success in market cap.
What if we measured success differently?
Lives helped.
Animals protected.
Communities mobilized.
The scoreboard would look very different. 🐾
What makes $AWF fascinating is not the chart.
It’s the idea that Ethereum may have discovered a new funding primitive for public goods:
attention → volume → fees → donations.
That loop has already generated 281 ETH for animal welfare.
animalwelfarefund.xyz
Vitalik, your 64 ETH donation to animal welfare really resonated. We took that spirit and built AWF as a pure community experiment: 2% automatic tax → public multisig, already >288 ETH donated, fully auditable on-chain. Zero middlemen, zero fees, participants from over 100 countries. It feels like Ethereum actually doing effective altruism at scale. Grateful you started this ripple.
@VitalikButerin
This message comes from a global community that is gradually losing its last remaining patience.
The AWF community, now consisting of over 1,900 members from more than 100 countries, came together under a shared belief — that blockchain could be used as a force for good, and that transparency, trust, and accountability are fundamental principles, not optional ideals.
Guided by that belief, the community collectively donated 288 ETH to the Effective Altruism initiative, using the exclusive donation address associated with you. Because this was a dedicated address connected to your advocacy, we understand that EA’s due diligence process would naturally involve contacting you directly.
However, this has also placed the community in a difficult position — we currently have no direct channel to reach EA, and all communication appears to be indirectly dependent on you. As of today, we have received no clear response regarding the status, allocation, or verification of these funds.
We fully respect that due diligence takes time. But the prolonged silence has led to growing uncertainty, and now serious concerns within the community.
Members are asking:
Where are the funds?
How are they being used?
What is the current status of EA’s review?
Why has there been no communication?
Why are we unable to reach EA at all?
At this stage, many community members have begun to seriously question the destination and purpose of the funds.
This situation is no longer just about a donation — it is about trust, credibility, and the integrity of a movement that encouraged people to give.
We are not here to accuse. We are here to seek clarity.
We sincerely hope that you could take a moment, despite your busy schedule, to help verify this matter, understand the AWF mechanism, and possibly check with EA on the current situation. It is also possible that EA does not yet fully understand how AWF operates, which may be contributing to the delay.
At present, we are completely unable to establish contact with EA.
Your involvement — even a brief acknowledgment or inquiry — could help restore confidence and bring much-needed transparency to the situation.
Despite everything, the community remains committed to continuing its charitable mission. We will carry on.
We sincerely wish you and your family continued health, safety, and strength.
