Why does academia take itself so seriously? Serious question. 🙃
Prestige journals say that they want diversity of "gender, race, location, career stage, yadda yadda" in their reviewer pool but that seems to me like a bunch of hot air. I guess they would rather ask the next white American professor on their list, amirite?
Every day I feel more and more like I don't belong. I guess I just don't have what it takes - being competent just isn't enough. I can live with that. But it's hard not feeling kind of sad and inadequate about it all. So, uh, like if you feel the same, I guess? #AcademicChatter
But does that mean I am *passionate* about it? Um, no. I am aware that these things also exist in other settings and, even though I consider myself to be a competent researcher, I do not think my ideas are so unique or spectacular as to make my life revolve around them.
Does anyone else struggle with how everyone on academic Twitter seems to be so passionate about their thing? I like learning new things, I like working on difficult problems and I like being surrounded by smart people, all of which I appreciate from being in a research setting.

I guess it somehow kinda works just because most people in academia are smart and do end up figuring it out, but it makes me wonder how long a company that operated like that would last. My guess: not long. #showerthoughts

Considering how poorly knowledge transfer works in academia, it's actually impressive anything gets done at all: new grad students are often thrown into projects with no introduction and only vague instructions to "figure it out"... (1/3) #AcademicChatter
Free advice for PIs: before blurting out whatever crappy experiment request for a student/postdoc to do, stop for a moment and ask yourself: (a) what question do I want to answer with this experiment? and (b) is this a question worth answering? You'll be amazed at the results 🙃

...while a bunch of collaborators hop into the paper just by turning knobs in an instrument, while big shots (sometimes even 2 or 3 in a single paper!) jump in by providing dubious "oversight and supervision". Yeah, right. Great teamwork there.
#AcademicTwitter's mantra that "all good science comes from teamwork" is problematic. Sometimes you just really have a single grad student or postdoc toiling day and night doing experiments and analyzing data... (1/2)

@xhimichka Technicians and non-research staff typically contribute much more than the guy from the lab next door that runs a half-assed analysis on the machine only they have and is rewarded with being fourth author, yet are never included as authors. But yeah, "ethics". It's so cynical.
European academia is so endogamous. People do their bachelor's, master's and PhD in the same university, maybe just go for a postdoc somewhere else, and return to be PIs in the same place they've always been. Inclusion and diversity? Yeah, right. 🙄 #AcademicChatter #PostDocLife
