Important progress from Anthropic: Claude Fable 5’s biology safeguards have been refined, cutting false positives by ~85%. This meaningfully expands support for everyday health questions and educational use cases—areas where AI can already deliver real value. At the same time, dual-use restrictions (virology, toxicology, molecular design) remain in place, so the model is still not suitable for professional biology research or drug development. The stated commitment to developing trusted access pathways for frontier capabilities is therefore the more consequential part of this announcement. For the biology and AI research community, the core challenge continues to be finding the right equilibrium: enabling capable models to accelerate discovery while maintaining rigorous safeguards against misuse. Closing that gap responsibly will determine how quickly AI can contribute at the frontier of medicine and the life sciences.

We believe the biggest positive impacts of AI will be in biology and medicine, and we’re committed to putting frontier intelligence safely into the hands of as many researchers as possible. Fable will continue to fallback to Opus 5 for requests we consider dual-use—including virology, toxicology, and molecular design—so it isn't yet usable for professional biology research and drug development.
