@jonnymood @NAOorguk HS2 & DfT failed to realise that very high speed trains are the worst value for money when it comes to saving time on a journey. £billions wasted to save 1 or 2 secs per kilometre. It's simple maths. Vastly increases cost & risk & reduces capacity too. 140mph is a sensible max.

They both recognised traffic was going to be a problem but 60 years later the Government is still making it worse through its hopeless planning policies & NPPF in particular.
@JohnBurnsMorgan @CommunityPlann1 @FT Had Leicestershire retained all its former rail lines for use as transport corridors it would not be leading the way in becoming one of the most car-dependent places in the country. It is now making it worse with no credible transport & land use strategy.
HS2 picked routes without looking at the constraints or proposed developments. It ignored the risks of not knowing the ground conditions & the need for a very stable alignment to support high speed trains. This is a desperate attempt to change history to cover incompetence.
HS2 docs said adding tunnels would save money. The stone (ballast) that supports conventional tracks disintegrates & damages trains & rails at the 186mh speed used on HS1. It would be stupid to use it at 225+mph & the time saving at such speeds is trivial. It was pure vanity.
How many lies are there here? Too many to list. £31m was the cost of the whole scheme to Leeds & Manchester & beyond. £100m excludes Euston & north of Birmingham. French trains travel faster than 168mph. I helped design HS2 – this is why it is broken share.google/BQ08oijaAGRjqh…
