Here's something I've learned after 70 years: “That's how it's always been done” is possibly the worst answer anyone can give me. 😂 I spent 23 years as an electronics engineer in the Royal Navy. If a radar stopped working, you couldn't repair it by respecting conventional wisdom. You had to ask: WHY isn't it working? That habit never left me. These days I find myself asking the same question about almost everything. Technology. Business. Medicine. Politics. Even science. And occasionally I ask a more dangerous question: What if everybody is looking at the problem the wrong way round? That's when things get interesting. I've got several ideas sitting on my desk right now that started with precisely that question. Some are perfectly sensible. At least one is probably completely bonkers. 😂 The problem is... I'm not yet certain which is which. 🤔😂 So here's today's question: What's one thing the world accepts as “normal” that you've always thought makes absolutely no sense?

Israel has pursued the weakening or disarmament of Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran — every significant military challenge to Israeli power in the region. The end result would be an extraordinary concentration of military power in one state's hands. And there is another uncomfortable question: Who exactly is dictating terms to whom here? Trump presents a Gaza peace plan. Netanyahu says no withdrawal until HIS conditions are met. For a country so dependent upon American military and diplomatic support, Israel appears to exercise remarkable influence over the policy of its superpower patron. Peace requires security for Israelis AND Palestinians. Disarmament without withdrawal, sovereignty and credible security guarantees isn't a peace settlement. IT IS SURRENDER!

Stop conflating Israel and its crimes with Jewish people as a whole.

ANTI-ZIONISM IS NOT ANTISEMITISM. And here in Britain, the courts have just reinforced an important distinction. Professor David Miller, formerly of Bristol University, established that his anti-Zionist beliefs qualified for protection as a philosophical belief under the Equality Act 2010. Bristol University appealed. This week, it lost. Jewish people are not the Israeli government. #Judaism is not #Zionism. And opposition to Zionism is not automatically hatred of Jewish people. So Mr @netanyahu , come out from behind the antisemitism shield and face the criticism of your government and its ideology on their merits. You cannot make legitimate political criticism disappear simply by labelling it antisemitism. People aren't falling for that anymore

@NancyMace This is how racism becomes normalised in politics. A Muslim candidate can be challenged on his policies, his record, his competence or his political beliefs — exactly like any other candidate. But when Muslim politicians are casually branded “terrorists” without evidence, we should recognise what is happening. The argument has moved from political disagreement to the demonisation of an entire identity. Replace “Muslim” with almost any other religious or ethnic minority and imagine the reaction. America should judge its candidates by what they do and what they stand for — not by whether their name, faith or background can be weaponised to frighten voters. Challenge the politics. Challenge the policies. But stop turning “Muslim” into a synonym for “terrorist”.

@JDVance apparently thinks excluding people because of their background can be dismissed as “common sense”. I'm a Muslim. I'm also a British Royal Navy veteran who served for 23 years, an engineer, businessman and community representative. So perhaps Mr Vance could explain which part of being Muslim makes someone inherently undesirable. But I suspect there is another reason Muslim politicians suddenly make some people very uncomfortable. Muslims in Western politics are no longer content simply to sit quietly on the sidelines. Zohran Mamdani is now Mayor of New York City — the first Muslim to hold that office. And this week Abdul El-Sayed won the Democratic nomination for the US Senate in Michigan, defeating Haley Stevens despite the enormous outside spending behind her. Something else is changing too. A new generation of politicians — Muslim and non-Muslim — is increasingly prepared to question America's relationship with Israel rather than treating unquestioning support for the Israeli government as a prerequisite for political office. THAT is the debate worth having. Judge Muslims on our conduct. Challenge our politics. Disagree with our beliefs. But don't tell millions of people that their religion makes them inherently unwelcome and then dress prejudice up as “common sense”. Ever heard of Curryoke? 🍛🎤 Curry. Karaoke. Indian restaurants. Today the word is used all over the place. But here's something you probably don't know. I invented it. 😂 Back in 1998, at my restaurant Tandoori Nights in Heywood, Lancashire, I had the slightly ridiculous idea of combining a curry night with karaoke. It worked. Then it REALLY worked. The Daily Telegraph picked it up. The Sun picked it up. Other restaurants started doing it. Eventually I trademarked CURRYOKE. And because apparently Curryoke wasn't quite enough madness, I persuaded local rock band Two Tone Karma to perform at the restaurant. Naturally, for the occasion they became... Two Tone Korma. 😂 We even experimented with Country & Western: Curry & Western night. Nearly 30 years later, Curryoke is still being used. Sometimes the daftest ideas are the ones that stick. And yes — I've kept the receipts. 👇😂
