I'm convinced Eggers is one of the best directors and storytellers of our time. He takes every project seriously and attempts to get to the root of the myth and present it as raw as possible without the modern deconstruction. Rather than laugh at the mystical or spiritual as most do, he assumes everything he’s portraying is real. One of my favorite parts about Nosferatu, for instance, is that although its main focus is on ancient paganism versus modern science, it still acknowledges the existence of Christian mysticism. In fact, the only person truly healed in the film underwent a Christian exorcism. His autistic attention to detail makes him a better fit for something like del Toro’s Frankenstein or even Nolan’s The Odyssey.
