@BrettSiegelNBA What incentive do they have to win now? It was all a race to the bottom, except now the bottom comes with a penalty.
Your takes on this issue have all been poor.
@BrettSiegelNBA@APH00PS There is no such thing as revenue from the pick. There is revenue from playoff games. Not to mention, the decreased odds for teams that miss the play-in is a strong disincentive to tank out of it.
@GoodFundies JD Davis - career 6.8 WAR player
Bo Bichette - career 19.9 WAR player (just turned 28)
This is an awful comparison. Davis was barely even a full-time player.
@SamulskiNYC He’s got a condition that pretty much nobody comes fully back from. Great guy to root for but I would not assume we’re seeing the same Wheeler again, especially at his age
@Mike_Kurland Obvious sell high candidate. Zero walks in 44 PA. He’s chasing a ton (39.8 O-Swing%), which is in line with what he did in the minors.
This is not a strong or balanced hitter’s profile. Nothing wrong with riding the wave, but knowing it will come crashing down is important too
@YankeesFocus BABIP is sometimes a function of playing poor hitters (not everyone is capable of league average), which happens when you bench your studs against all LHP despite evidence they're actually very capable against them.
@LouisAnalysis Not that it's a bad thing those guys are raking, but I am always more skeptical of spring training performances when an entire team is crushing the ball. Says a lot, really.
@rossjensen But Judge is a .331 hitter because he’s insanely selective and the best power hitter of our generation, resulting in incredible contact quality and very high BABIPs.
If he had an elite hit tool he’d be the greatest hitter of all time.
@rossjensen After 2000 AB, a career .300 hitter could be that for a variety of reasons (hit tool, power, speed). Hit tool might not be the main reason they got there as again avg can be influenced by many things
@rossjensen I get your logic but if you’re trying to predict AVG, which seems to be your measure of hit tool, then contact + contact quality are the best indicators.
Damn these character limits!
@rossjensen Average and contact are two different things. Lots of things (power, speed, variance) can influence average, even over large samples, but contact is contact and hit tool is largely if not exclusively about contact.
@rossjensen I think the issue is conflating good hitter with high averages with hit tool. Those are not always the same thing. Elite hit tool hitters generally hit for high avg, but hitting for high average doesn’t necessarily mean a player has an elite hit tool, even over large samples
@rossjensen Batted ball data that points to quality of contact.
Either way, the low K player is very likely to have the better hit tool because hit tool is largely a function of contact ability and K rate is the best indicator of that.
@rossjensen@GoatedCardinals You guys do great work, so I'm def not trying to dump on it - just think it's an interest topic.
If AVG and OBP are how you define hit tool, wouldn't SO and BB rates be the best indicators?
Crawford is kind of middle of the road in both, while JJ and McGonigle are both elite.
