As someone who relied on free and reduced-price lunch as a kid, I know that children with full bellies do better at school. Let’s pass universal school meals to ensure every student is fed and no child has to worry about the stigma of food insecurity.

My worst day in the classroom was 9/11, and we were attacked from without. On Jan 6th, we were attacked from within. I am grateful to begin this session and serve on the State Gov, Elections, and Education committees where we will work to reestablish trust in our Democracy.

Putting this out into the #mnleg hive mind: using medicaid direct certification for identifying students who qualify for free meals makes FRPL forms obsolete. Don't need 'em for calculating compensatory revenue, and won't need 'em once we pass universal meals. Time to let go.

Today we announced that Minnesota will expand the availability of free meals to 90,000 new students this school year. This project means fewer kids will go hungry at school. As a former teacher for 20+ years, I know that this is hugely important to help students succeed.
