We’re carrying out works on the electronic signage on the bridge this Wednesday (1st July), which will require a lane closure in both directions. The traffic management will be in place 8am-3pm (Southbound) and 9am-3pm (Northbound). We ask that drivers take extra care when travelling through the traffic management areas, and we apologise for any inconvenience caused. #HumberBridge

You may notice some hair raising activity on the bridge next week as our Engineering Team carries out routine inspections on the cables. From Monday 29th June, engineers will be walking the cables as part of this planned activity. There's no need to worry about delays: traffic will continue to cross as normal, with no impact on the carriageways. These inspections are an important part of keeping the bridge safe and in top condition.

On this day in 1981, the Humber Bridge opened to traffic for the first time. The official opening with Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip would take place a few weeks later. In the 45 years since, the bridge has become the landmark that symbolises our region. So much more than just a crossing, it is the setting for countless days out and charity events. On this day back in 1978, cable spinning was well under way, the side panels were being fitted to the Barton Anchorage, and denim was the PPE de jour!! Cable spinning refers to the circular motion of the wheel taking the strands back and forth between the two towers – the wires in the main cable all run parallel. The main cable is made up of 37 strands, each containing 404 5mm wires, each wire is the thickness of a pencil. Cable spinning was a 24-hour a day endeavour, with two shifts running from 6am to 10pm and from 10pm through to 6am the following day. Once the cable was completed it was compacted and cable bands were clamped in position. From these cable bands, the hangers to the road deck were suspended. #HumberBridge #Engineering

@Fieldsy1975 It actually does but not in the way you think. You pop in your VRN and the system will work out the toll rate. Then you choose how many crossing you want to pay for and then the system works out the total.

On this day back in 1980, the last of the road deck boxes were being put in place. The road section is made up of 124 steel boxes - each one is about 18 metres long and weighs about 140 tonnes – about twice as heavy as The Space Shuttle The boxes were put together at an assembly yard just two miles downstream from where the bridge was being built. Once ready, the sections were then floated down the Humber on barges and lifted and fixed into place. Each steel box section of the road deck is connected so it’s possible to walk through the road deck from one side of the bridge to the other with the traffic crossing just above your head. The road deck of the Humber Bridge is built to be aerodynamic so it works with the wind and the environment of the estuary, rather than against it. Each section is built like an upside-down wing. Normally, the shape of wings work with the wind to lift things. But by reversing the shape – and therefore reversing the principle - the wind helps keep the Humber Bridge road deck stable. #HumberBridge #Engineering

Get ready for a fantastic day of racing as the Humber Bridge Soapbox Derby returns this Saturday (20th June)! Watch homemade soapbox racers take on the course, showcasing creativity, engineering skill and plenty of speed, all set against the backdrop of the iconic Humber Bridge. The free event runs from 10am–3pm and features food stalls, live music and family-friendly activities, making it a great day out for all ages. A huge thank you to @hull4heroes and Hessle Town Council for once again organising this fantastic community event. All proceeds go to Hull4Heroes’ vital work of supporting veterans and their families across Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire.

Today we have lane closed southbound for the full length of the bridge, and a short lane closure northbound (between Barton viaduct and barton tower). Then tomorrow we will have a lane closed in both directions. We ask that drivers take extra care when travelling through the traffic management areas, and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.
