@INDIACCDC's DigiCare project, an NHRP initiative of @ICMRDELHI , is progressing through its Co-Design Phase, collaboratively developing digital health interventions with key stakeholders. The team recently held discussions with Dr. Anadi Gupt, State Program Officer (NHM Himachal Pradesh), to align proposed interventions with state health priorities, followed by a Plan-Do-Study-Act cycle at Panjera Sub-Centre, Solan, to test and refine the implementation strategies. New Research: Can wearables help predict worsening heart failure? A new study co-authored by Prof. Dorairaj Prabhakaran, Executive Director and Dr. Arun P. Jose, Deputy Director & Head, BRIDGE Centre for Digital Health, CCDC, published in JACC: Heart Failure, examined whether a wearable device could flag early physiological signs of worsening heart failure, potentially before symptoms appear. In this validation study of 124 heart failure patients, the AI-based monitoring approach showed stronger sensitivity and longer early-warning windows than conventional weight-based monitoring, a standard but limited method used in HF care today. Researchers note that larger, prospective studies are still needed before such approaches can inform clinical decision-making at scale. As the Co-Lead Institution, @INDIACCDC is delighted to invite Institutional Ethics Committee Members to apply for a Short Course on Research Ethics. Led by the Global Health Research Centre for Multiple Long-Term Conditions, the three-day short course aims to provide a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of applied research ethics. Postdoctoral Research Associates at the Centre for Environmental Health and Sustainability, University of Leicester; Dr. Enock Havyarimana, Dr. Katie Eminson and Dr. Xiangpu Gong, joined us to enrich the day’s workshop on Environmental Noise Pollution and Human Health. Dr Havyaraimana’s talk highlighted the impact of transport noise on cognition and dementia risk: Evidence from UK Biobank and the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Dr. Eminson delivered a talk on the association between road traffic noise and blood pressure using data from the ALSPAC cohort. Dr. Gong presented findings linking higher aircraft noise exposure associated with risk of dementia and adverse brain remodelling. CCDC’s former team members, currently PhD Students at the Centre for Environmental Health and Sustainability, University of Leicester, highlighted the current evidence on environmental noise and health in India and highlighted emerging research priorities to address existing knowledge gaps. Dr. Sierra Clark, from the City St George's, University of London, delivered a keynote address on Noise and health studies in sub-Saharan Africa: Lessons learned from Accra (Ghana) and Kigali (Rwanda). She discussed her work on noise and air quality from 2018 to now and highlighted the lack of systematic noise data in Sub-Saharan Africa and the need for high-quality, longitudinal studies. As the day proceeded, the participants indulged in a hands-on experience with Noise Monitoring Equipment led by Krithika Anand from the @uniofleicester , where she explained the functionality of the handheld noise level meter, emphasising its ability to average noise levels and store data. She described two scenarios: a busy street in Old Delhi and a recording from a natural setting. The demonstration highlighted the subjective nature of noise perception and its impact on stress levels. Dr Girish Agrawal, Professor at the Transportation Research and Injury Prevention Centre, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi took the centre stage and discussed the impact of traffic noise on human hearing in Indian cities, highlighting the growing public health implications of urban noise exposure. We then virtually welcomed Dr Calvin Jephcote, Lecturer in Exposure Science at the University of Leicester, who presented the noise exposure modelling and burden of disease in the UK settings. At the ongoing UK India Research Workshop on Environmental Noise Pollution and Human Health in New Delhi, we are glad to host researchers and public health experts from India and the UK to discuss emerging evidence on environmental noise pollution and its impacts on human health. The day began with Dr @DrPoornimaP - Deputy Director, Environmental Health at @INDIACCDC & Director, Centre for Health Analytics Research and Trends (@CHART_TSB )- @AshokaUniv, who provided an overview of environmental determinants of health from an Indian perspective. This session was followed by Dr Samuel Cai- Lecturer in Environmental Epidemiology, Centre for Environmental Health, @uniofleicester , who highlighted environmental noise as an emerging public health hazard. CCDC’s Senior Research Scientists, Dr Jyothi S Menon Menon and Mr Ajit Rajiva presented the current scenario of noise pollution in India, discussing exposure patterns, existing regulations, monitoring approaches, and the associated health risks. The discussions emphasised the growing recognition of environmental noise as a significant health risk alongside air pollution and climate change. Presentations explored recent advances in exposure assessment, including personal noise monitoring, high-resolution environmental mapping, and the integration of epidemiological evidence better to understand the links between environmental exposures and chronic diseases. We are pleased to host a one-of-a-kind workshop on 'Environmental Noise and Health Research' today in collaboration with @royalsociety and the @uniofleicester. This is the first-ever initiative to systematically investigate noise exposures and health outcomes in India. The one-day workshop brings together researchers from the University of Leicester, @INDIACCDC, and the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (@iitdelhi) to share their work, align methodologies, and identify next steps for future collaboration. International collaborators are presenting comparative findings from the UK and other LMIC settings, enriching the discussion with cross-regional perspectives on noise and health research. India's urban populations face compounding exposures to multiple environmental stressors such as air pollution, extreme heat, limited green space, and noise. In contrast to the other three exposures, noise is a substantially underexplored risk factor in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), including India. In such LMIC settings, populations are exposed to dangerously high levels of environmental noise, which potentially contributes to cardiovascular morbidity, impaired cognitive function, and poor mental health through stress-mediated and inflammatory mechanisms. In the country's urban centres, vehicular traffic (road noise and honking) is the predominant source of environmental noise, followed by construction activities, railway operations, aircraft movement, and industrial activities. Currently, most evidence in this research area is based on European population-based studies. Existing research in LMICs has largely been confined to noise level monitoring and community surveys on awareness and perception of sound pollution. There remains a paucity of high-quality epidemiological studies examining the potentially causal relationship between noise pollution and various health outcomes in Indian populations. Moreover, research investigating the interactive effects of co-occurring exposures such as air pollution, green spaces, and urban heat remains underexplored in LMIC settings. We are excited to be at this important intersection and facilitate discussions that will help shape future research in this emerging field.
