It’s ironic how everyone stopped caring about debt and deficits right before they started to matter. The height of the Tea Party days saw an enormous amount of attention devoted to government spending, deficits, interest rates, and America’s looming sovereign debt crisis. And because almost nothing was done about it, we sort of just moved on and stopped caring. Why bother if the Democrats are going to reflexively oppose anything you do and attack you for it in the process? The risk-reward was so lopsided in favor of “stop caring about this issue” that it was only a matter of time until Republicans learned the political lesson and stopped touching the stove. But the Tea Parry Republicans of 2010 were trying to turn the stove off. And because they never could, the kitchen is now on fire.

McCarthyism is a good example of the curse of the right: McCarthy was directional correct but he was also a drunk and a showboat who made up a lot of stuff and ended up discrediting his cause and doing it more harm than good.

This is true. But “the people” are always going to experience a vague feeling that Man in White House = Responsible for Current Situation. This is a misguided if unavoidable feeling among people that we have to manage the best we can.
