Today marks the anniversary of the Battle of Grunwald, fought on July 15, 1410—one of the largest and most decisive battles of the Middle Ages. It reshaped Eastern Europe as the seemingly invincible Teutonic Order was defeated by a coalition of Poles, Lithuanians, Ukrainians (then known as Ruthenians), Crimean Tatars, and other allies. More than 90 banners fought under the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, including 17 Ukrainian banners from Lviv, Kyiv, Volyn, Podolia, and other Ukrainian lands. Many Ukrainian warriors distinguished themselves. Among them were Sigismund Korybut, who commanded his own banner and later fought alongside Jan Žižka in the Hussite Wars; Ivanko Sushik of Romanov, whose bravery earned him lands in Galicia from King Władysław II Jagiełło; Danylo Chemerovetsky, the king's chief gunner; Fredro fought near Grunwald and is the founder of a famous Galician noble family and the direct ancestor of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky; and Bartosz Holovatsky of Terebovlya, who captured a Teutonic banner and was rewarded with land and a tax exemption. Other notable participants included Fyodor Ostrozkyi, governor of Lutsk and great-grandfather of the famed commander Konstanty Ostrogski, along with many other Ruthenian knights fighting under the banners of Lviv and neighboring lands. King Władysław II Jagiełło himself has Ruthenian ancestry through his mother, Uliana Aleksandrovna of the Romanovichi dynasty. Other Ukrainian knights under the banners of the Lviv banners include Stanislav Koritko, Popel, Drahin Volokh, Danylo Zaderevennetsky, and Khodka Cheremysh. Many Ruthenian banners, including the banner of Lviv, were blue and yellow, leading some historians to suggest they may have inspired the modern Ukrainian flag! Today, Grunwald represents more than a medieval victory. It reminds us that Ukraine has deep historical ties to Europe and has long been part of its history. Ukraine is Europe. The "Battle of Nations" brought together Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine (including Crimea) to overcome a common enemy. Its legacy remains relevant today: when nations stand together, they are stronger than any force that seeks to divide them.

The mystery is solved. Ukraine’s UAS Forces @usf_army have been running Operation “MoLoCHKa” for weeks. Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians have been asking what the name means. Commander Robert “Magyar” Brovdi just answered: “MLCHK — MOskva Lyazhe Cherez Krym. Moscow will fall through Crimea. Amen. Everything is black and white.” The logic behind the name is the logic behind the operation: Crimea is Putin’s greatest propaganda trophy. Russia’s seizure of the peninsula in 2014 was presented as the defining achievement of his regime. Its loss would be a blow the Kremlin may not survive. So Ukraine is making Crimea impossible to hold — systematically, ship by ship, substation by substation, bridge by bridge. And today — on Ukrainian Statehood Day — Magyar announced the operation has expanded to the Black Sea. Round 1 in the Azov Sea: 116 vessels struck. Round 2 opens in the Black Sea: 20 vessels struck overnight — 17 oil tankers, 2 gas carriers, 1 tugboat. The Azov is done. The Black Sea is next. MoLoCHKa continues. Moscow will fall through Crimea.
