Mandel and Johnson (2002) found that website background images impact consumer searches. Customers who went to a furniture website when the background was clouds concentrated their searches on comfort, whereas those who saw pennies searched based on price. #marketing #business

Be careful with #incentives. @intel found that, relative to no incentives at all, a modest cash incentive boosted #productivity by 4.9% on the day it was offered, but actually reduced productivity by 13.2% the next day (relative to peers who had no incentive either day).

@amazon originally gave free shipping only if you spent over a certain amount. Average purchases rose to just above the free shipping threshold except in France, where shipping was not free but only 1 franc (about 20 cents). 20 cents made all the difference - #free moves people.

Great article about the benefits of joint evaluation: hbr.org/2017/06/to-mak… But joint evaluation is also susceptible to predictable errors (e.g related to alignable and non-alignable options), and savvy businesses anticipate these patterns as they build their strategies.

#Branding matters. A year ago, Dunkin' Donuts quietly became just Dunkin'. Why? Because branding #influences #consumer #expectations. In Dunkin's case, they worried "Donuts" was constraining consumer beliefs about their menu items, making it challenging to expand their offerings.
