The one that always comes to mind for us is Atonement. A child tells a single lie trying to fix what she thinks she saw, and it derails three lives. She wasn’t being malicious, she just set the wrong thing in motion. What’s a book where the character’s own choice was the twist?

C.S. Lewis called this “asking the reader to do the job for you,” and he lived by it. He describes a snowy wood or a Turkish Delight so plainly you feel the cold or taste the sweetness yourself. No “it was magical” needed. What habit did you train yourself out of?

C.S. Lewis said don’t tell the reader it was delightful, write it so they say “delightful” themselves. Most of us show something, then explain it anyway. “His jaw tightened, showing his anger.” Search your draft for “showing” and cut what follows. 🌸

100 Years of Solitude opens with a man facing a firing squad remembering the afternoon his father took him to see ice, & then just tells you about the ice. You spend the whole gentle scene bracing. García Márquez does in one sentence what most books can’t do in a chapter. 🤯📚✍️

The name for it: prolepsis. A small flash-forward that tells the reader something is coming, without saying what. “It was the last morning the house stood,” & suddenly an ordinary scene aches. Promise the future once, then let the quiet do the work. #WritingCommunity #amwriting
