The morula is a key stage of embryo development often overshadowed by the blastocyst. Morulas form around 4 days after fertilisation when cells compact together like a bunch of grapes 🍇 the more cells included in the bunch, the higher the grade and better chance of success💫

Monozygotic - one fertilised egg (zygote) splits into two to give identical twins 👉 ie. One zygote. Dizygotic - two separate eggs are fertilised by two separate sperm to give non-identical twins 👉 ie. Two zygotes. #IVF #fertility #infertility #twins

Not only is the sperm the smallest cell in the body... it is also the only cell which is motile! The long self-propelling tail, or flagellum, drives the sperm towards the egg and helps it to squirm through the outer shell during fertilisation #IVF

This is an ICSI micromanipulator. It is a complex, high power microscope which uses an extremely sharp needle only 0.005mm wide to inject a single sperm into an egg. The process is so delicate it must be used on an anti-vibration stage to prevent even the tiniest movements #IVF

Don't be fooled by ICSI. There is no denying it is a fantastic advancement for men with poor quality sperm, but it doesn't increase fertilisation rates for couples with normal sperm parameters #IVF #ICSI #fertility #infertility

Don't be disheartened if your embryos aren't top quality. Grading is certainly useful to select which embryos to use... but it doesn't necessarily determine the ability to form a pregnancy. Who cares about grades when your embaby arrives 9 months later!

Preimplantation genetic screening (PGS) is becoming very popular in #IVF. It involves taking ~5 cells from the embryo at the blastocyst stage and testing the DNA to check for errors in the chromosomes. It is thought that around 50% of all IVF embryos are genetically abnormal 😱🧬

Did you know that during fertilisation it is the sperm's job to 'activate' the egg? Eggs lays dormant for decades until one is eventually chosen to be ovulated. The sperm causes a cascade of changes inside the egg which springs it back into action so it can become an embryo #ivf
