The Nazis killed at Dachau mostly by hangings and firing squads, in addition to the usual starvation, beatings, and disease. If you were sent to Dachau, you had about a 50% of survival.

@tamaraswizzle @CynicalPublius @pgeerkens “Extermination camps” ARE “death camps”, you moron. The Germans also called Vernichtungslager (“Extermination Camps”) Todeslager (“Death Camps”). Ever been to Dachau? I have. I’ve seen the gas chamber and the crematoria. The Germans preferred to shoot or hang people at Dachau.

@pgeerkens @CynicalPublius It must be emphasized: ALL the Nazi camps were meant to destroy you: physically, mentally, emotionally. But only the 6 extermination camps were designed to flat-out kill you. And only 4 were designed exclusively to kill you; Auschwitz was also a work camp (Auschwitz III Monowitz)

@pgeerkens @CynicalPublius Technically, Auschwitz was a concentration camp. Its extensive extermination facilities were at Auschwitz II Birkenau, which had 90,000 prisoners, many, many more than all the other death camps combined. That’s why Auschwitz has a lot of survivors and the other death camps don’t.

@pgeerkens @CynicalPublius There were 4 Vernichtungslager per se: the experimental camp at Kulmhof (Chełmno nad Nerem) and the 3 Operation Reinhardt camps (Bełżec, Sobibor, Treblinka). Almost no one sent to these camps survived. The other 2 were composite camps: Lublin (Majdanek) and Auschwitz.

@CynicalPublius @pgeerkens I love your work, so I hate to say this, but he’s right. While all the Nazi camps were meant to destroy you, there were only six extermination camps per se, all in Poland. Dachau was more of a brutal prison. The gas chamber there was reportedly never used.
