This case is a grim reminder and cautionary tale about what can happen when political sectarianism takes over for reasoned debate. Robinson and his inner circle regarded disagreements over transgender policy to be “moral evil and hatred”— and not to be tolerated under any circumstances. Tragically one life was taken, another likely will be behind bars for life, and Kirk’s family and friends will carry the grief and trauma for the rest of their lives. This is a case of political sectarianism—the bigoted refusal to see legitimate disagreement as anything except hatred—played a central role. It did not and should not have ended in violence. Violence is never an appropriate response to rhetoric or ideas, no matter how strongly one disagrees.

I know I'm old-fashioned this way, but I still think due process is the best way (ie: the only reliable way) to determine guilt and the truth of accusations. Online mobs and trial by media are infinitely more unreliable for all sorts of reasons that should be obvious.

I started studying the mindset called political sectarianism (aka affective polarization) when someone close to me started labeling mere differences of viewpoint “hate” if she merely disagreed. What she labeled as hateful were merely moderate views like no third term abortions or we need police to protect the law-abiding from violent behavior. Americans used to passionately argue issues without resorting to dehumanizing others simply for disagreeing. Ted Kennedy was billed as the Lion of the Senate. I’ll never forget when he and Joe Biden went after Clarence Thomas, “high-tech lynching” of a Black judge simply because he didn’t share their political views. I was young but it’s when my opinion of DC politics changed forever.
