Wouldn't it be more efficient to not spend millions of taxpayers' money on yet another attempt at a failed socialist experiment of state run grocery stores? How about lower taxes on lower and middle income folks so they can afford more? How about reducing regulations on businesses so they can offer products and services for less, and still earn a liveable wage? Less spending, less inflation, less government, more private sector jobs, more market driven innovation, more independence, along with a social safety net for those who truly aren't able work.

I actually completely agree with you there. The conditions leading to this point where a DSA Mayor has been voted for in the center of global capitalism in NYC are worth careful study 💯. I hope people in NYC and elsewhere don't fall for the false promises of communism and the charlatans like Mamdani that try to lead people down that path. And, at the same time, I do hope new and better solutions are developed that help people at all levels in our society.

How can any privately run store compete on price with a government subsidized store? Who would chose a store with higher prices for the same good? Where does this lead? How has this worked when it's been tried in other places? It's a terrible idea that might have short term benefits for some, will hurt others in the short term, and if it grows it will do massive harm to almost everyone (except the socialists in power).

If by "mixed economy" you mean a system that is fundamentally based on capitalism, but also with a social safety net (I'm also a fan of the new savings account for newborns and children), and minimal (but not zero) regulation, then I think we agree. And I agree with you that our healthcare system is in great need to improvement too.

I suggest people advocate for policies that lower costs by increasing supply of goods and services, increase the number of jobs, increase new housing units, lower inflation (a balanced budget amendment would go a long way here!), and make it easier for entrepreneurs to create new innovative solutions for businesses and consumers. Even more reliance on government will not end well, and artificial price caps like rent control and government run stores that promise to sell good for 30% less, are short term fixes that only make the problems worse in the long run. See Cuba, Venezuala, Russia, North Korea for real world data to support this position.

Who's "you guys"? Do you pay taxes? Every taxpayer should be concerned about where and how their hard earned money is spent. Personally, I'd prefer not see taxpayers' money spent on socialist policies that have proven over and over throughout the world to be complete failures, that end up hurting rather than helping people (except those who are in power).

Walmart can choose a price point and a consumer can decide whether or not to purchase at that price. Government subsidies take from tax payers and create artificially lower prices that private stores, large and small cannot compete with. Have fun shopping for a wide variety of products on Cuba, North Korea, or any communist country. Competition results in better products at better prices over the long term.
