People sometimes ask why Jews are so disproportionately represented in science, medicine, law, mathematics, literature, academia, and Nobel Prizes. The answer is more interesting than simply saying, “Jews are intelligent.” For roughly 2,000 years, Jewish culture placed an extraordinary emphasis on literacy, education, questioning, memory, interpretation, and debate. Studying Torah was not reserved exclusively for a tiny intellectual elite. Learning became deeply embedded in Jewish religious and family life. Then there’s the Talmud. Traditional Talmudic study isn’t simply memorizing religious rules. A page can contain competing arguments, objections, counterarguments, analogies, exceptions, and centuries of commentary. Students are expected to ask why, identify contradictions, defend an interpretation, and sometimes argue both sides of a question. That creates a culture in which intellectual ability carries enormous social prestige. History reinforced it. In different periods and places, Jews were restricted from owning land, joining guilds, or entering certain occupations. Jewish communities consequently became heavily represented in portable, urban, knowledge-based occupations such as commerce, finance, medicine, scholarship, and eventually the professions. And because Jewish communities repeatedly faced expulsion and displacement, education had another advantage: knowledge is portable. You can lose your land and possessions. What you’ve learned goes with you. The results today are remarkable. Jews constitute only a tiny fraction of the world’s population yet have been extraordinarily represented among Nobel laureates and in numerous intellectual and professional fields. There are controversial theories proposing that genetics also contributed to unusually high average cognitive-test performance reported in some Ashkenazi Jewish populations. Those hypotheses remain debated and should not be presented as settled science. Intelligence is complex, populations overlap enormously, and neither ancestry nor an IQ average tells you how intelligent an individual person will be. What we can say with much greater confidence is that Jewish civilization spent centuries making learning, literacy, questioning, argument, and scholarship central cultural values. When a civilization teaches generation after generation that studying is sacred and asking difficult questions is a virtue, it shouldn’t surprise anyone when that civilization produces a lot of scholars. In Judaism, asking questions was never the enemy of faith. It was part of the education.
