"The Mandans have been known from the time of the first visits made to them to the day of their destruction, as one of the most friendly and hospitable tribes on the United States frontier; and it had become a proverb in those regions..."that no Mandan ever killed a white man.""
"A magnificent example of nature's beauty and complexity is demonstrated by the insect shown here, with its vivid colors and complicated patterns that make it look like it's a part of a larger artwork.
Some historians: Umm actually the Anglo-Saxons were just peaceful settlers.
Saxon man meeting the Britons: Hi I'm Knife-Spear. This is my wife Knife-Fortress, and our kids Knife-Helm, Knife-Battle, and Knife-Wolf. Our tribe is called the Knives.
The single biggest irrigated crop in America isn't corn, wheat, or soybeans. It's not even avocados or almonds. It's lawn.
We grow more grass than any food crop in the country, around 40 million acres of it, and almost none of it feeds a single living thing.
Think about how strange that is. We took a grass that isn't even from here, planted it coast to coast, and now we pour water, fertilizer, and pesticide into keeping it short, green, and perfectly useless.
To a bee, a butterfly, or a bird hunting caterpillars for its chicks, a manicured lawn is a desert. Nothing to eat, nowhere to nest, mile after mile of it.
But here's the good news, maybe the easiest win on this whole account: you don't have to fix the entire desert. You just have to claw back a corner.
Pick one strip. The hellstrip by the sidewalk, the run along the fence, that awkward patch you hate mowing anyway. Stop mowing it and plant it with native flowers, a few black-eyed Susans, some bee balm, a couple of coneflowers. That's it. No ripping out the whole yard, no fight with anybody. Just convert one piece.
And that piece stops being dead space and starts being habitat: bees, butterflies, and birds showing up to a spot that offered them nothing a year ago.
Now picture your neighbor doing the same, and the one after that. That's how a desert turns back into a meadow, one reclaimed corner at a time.
In 1830, a lawyer named George Catlin saw it coming:
The erasure of Native America.
Not in theory. In real time.
So he did the unthinkable—
Quit his career, grabbed his brushes, and set out to paint every tribe he could find…
Before it was too late.
I just finished re-reading this terrific biography by a boy who was captured in Texas by Apaches in 1870, and raised as an Apache warrior. The "currency" among the plains Indians was the horse, and tribal bands were in perpetual competition to acquire them by theft on raids.
Warriors were so valuable that even captive boys, White or Mexican, were prized. It was a given that they would be "Stockholm Syndromed" into the tribe. When a squaw gave birth to a girl, there was no celebration. Boys who then became warriors were the wealth of the tribal band. There was no place for "soft" boys. They would abandoned at best. Because there were always losses (KIA) on raids, or when attacked by other bands, finding new boys who would grow to be warriors was a constant mission.
I cannot possibly recommend this book highly enough. I've read it 3 times, and am constantly reminded of it's timeless lessons as applied to modern life, and especially if we enter seriously hard times, with competition for the basics of life, like food.
The Anglo-Saxons were Germanic tribes, Angles, Saxons and Jutes, who crossed the North Sea in the 5th century and built the foundations of England.
They were a warrior people. Loyalty to kin, tribe and oath mattered above everything. They defended their land, built kingdoms like Wessex and Mercia, and shaped the language, laws and culture that became English.
For many of us this is not distant history. It is ancestry.
The blood of those North Sea warriors still runs through the English people today, the men who farmed the land, defended their homes, and forged the beginnings of England.
Remember who and where you come from 🏴
Queen Nanny of the Maroons.
Born 1686: Ghana 🇬🇭
Died 1733/1750: Jamaica 🇯🇲
For over 30 years it is said she fought and freed over 800 enslàved people on the island of Jamaica. There are many stories about her, it is said she was a queen in Ghana from the warrior Ashanti tribe when she was captured and brought to Jamaica where she later escaped and led an armed revolt against the British Empire in the mountains and jungles of Jamaica for two decades.
It is said she used guerilla warfare to fight the B.ritish who suffered great loss and later settled with a peace treaty to spare their men. She was said to also be a powerful spiritual voodoo priestess who would use her powers to shield her fighters from the attacks of the British.
One British officer who was lucky to survived her encounter described her as being small, muscular and strong with intense eyes. She wore a girdle with at least 10 different combat kn iv es. Queen Nanny is Jamaica's only female hero and there are still Maroons living in Jamaica today.
When I tried to review the un-redacted environmental assessment reports as they relate to Fort Edward Solar this past fall, I was met with dozens of pages of redactions.
I tried calling, visiting clerks' offices, and making appointments with ORES. That's when I learned ORES was not interested in hearing from the public at all.
I knew we'd have to buy unbiased science to know the true biodiversity at the Fort Edward Grasslands. We, American Land Rescue Fund, did just that by hiring Hudsonia Ltd. and a PhD ecologist to compile an environmental assessment (linking to it below).
To no one's surprise, our assessment was the first and ONLY piece of scientific literature on the scene here to address, or even acknowledge, pollinators and their dependence on grassland habitat.
Here are some photos I took this week, June 2026, at the Fort Edward Grasslands.
It's blanketed in milkweed, the ONLY host plant for the monarch butterfly.
Since the 1990s, we have lost over 80% of this butterfly.
Not too far from this grassland is another habitat for an endangered butterfly: the Karner blue.
As our assessment stated:
"There is a population of the Endangered Karner blue butterfly in the Saratoga Sandplains WMA (Shaw 2025) approximately eight miles southwest of the Fort Edward Solar site, and its larval host plant, wild blue lupine (Lupinus perennis) occurs in Washington County as well (NYFA 2025). There may be lenses of acidic sands in the glaciolacustrine clays, as is the case farther south in the Lake Albany terrain. Possibly both blue lupine and Karner blue occur in the IBA and they should be surveyed for."
I have learned that Boralex, ORES, and the @NYSDEC are not interested in surveying for that lupine.
Endangered species only matter to them when it complements their green energy grift.
In this case, the endangered pollinators and rare plants at the Fort Edward Grasslands stand in the way of a 100MW solar industrial complex that was sold-out to Canada.
So they omitted mentioning pollinators altogether.
Before you pull that fat striped caterpillar off your dill, take a second look at it.
The green-and-black banded caterpillar chewing your parsley, dill, or fennel is very likely a black swallowtail larva. The female laid a single egg on your herb plant after detecting the right chemistry, and that caterpillar is the result.
Black swallowtails are common across much of North America, especially east of the Rockies, and they're one of the more striking backyard butterflies you’re likely to see. Deep black wings marked with yellow, orange, and blue along the edges. If you've seen one visiting your flowers, this is where it started.
The caterpillar will eat a fair amount before it's done. If you only have one plant and want to protect it, you can always grow an extra and move the caterpillar over. Dill and its relatives self-seed easily, so there's usually more on the way anyway.
Or just leave it. You planted the herbs. The butterfly found them. That's the system working exactly as it should.
It's natural for people to want more. More money, more benefits, more luxuries. People can't really be blamed for coming to the UK. You can't blame a dog for barking, you can't blame a fish for swimming, you can't blame a bird for flying, it's what they do. In the same way you can't fully blame other tribes for trying to take over your land. It's why other tribes have always done. It's natural. What is unnatural and against nature is when members of your own tribe actively work in favour of another tribe and facilitate them at the expense of their own. Traitors have always existed in every society but they've always been small and usually quiet. Today they are loud and have state backing, but they are still a minority. Don't give up hope men of England. We're on the right side of history 🏴
