This morning at Grace Mosaic, one of the elders of the Grace DC Network (inclusive of three constituent congregations under one Session) shared "a followup" to last Sunday's debacle (my word, not his) involving Joel Littlepage's announced defection to Rome. This elder gave the uncomfortable followup announcement with admirable winsomeness, but great nervousness (completely understandable). It seems to me that he was reading from prepared notes (see clip in thread below). I don't envy this brother for the announcement he was tasked to make, but I was blown away (i.e., deeply offended) by this UNBELIEVABLE and scandalous claim: "We just wanted to make clear that [Joel] chose to make an announcement about his new theological commitments during the service without consulting with or the knowledge of the elders, of those who participated in the service—including our friend Irwyn—or the broader Grace DC leadership—including pastor Glenn" (emphasis mine). I have some MAJOR problems with this: 1 - Apostasy is not "new theological commitments." That kind of euphemistic language is completely inappropriate. To draw from an analogy I used yesterday, that's like referring to an affair as an "indiscretion." Give us a break. Joel Littlepage apostatized and is taking his family with him into the belly of the Roman Catholic beast. The gospel is absent in Rome's fires of works-righteousness. These are not simply "new theological commitments." It's not like he's become an Anglican or joined the EPC or something. 2 - It is my understanding that Joel has been treading water (if not swimming) in the Tiber for quite a while. His farewell letter says, "After years of discernment, prayer, and direction, I made the difficult but honest decision to begin the process of leaving Mosaic in early 2025. This decision was in the best interest of truth, honesty, and responsiveness to the leading of the Holy Spirit in my life and in my family's life. I also felt confident that my calling as a pastor during the last six months was to do all in my power to stabilize Grace Mosaic in a time when the congregation was undergoing significant change." In a highly relational environment like the Grace DC Network, there were surely conversations about this among the leaders (and influential friends) of Grace DC over the last year (if not longer). To suggest otherwise is just unbelievable. Joel's wife posted at least one celebratory social media post about the Pope after Leo's installation this past spring, too. I mean, the signs were there. 3 - Regardless of what Irwyn or the other attendees at Grace Mosaic last week might have been expecting when they went to church, what transpired should have stopped them in their tracks long before Joel blasphemed the words of institution. If you've made it this far, let me say this without any equivocation: if a Presbyterian minister stands up and says that he is giving up the pastoral ministry because he is becoming a Roman Catholic, then DO NOT receive the Lord's Supper from him. Even Roman Catholic priests have chimed in and said that Joel was a bad Presbyterian AND a bad Roman Catholic at that moment. I can only imagine the shock and discomfort which Irwyn and the leaders at Grace Mosaic experienced last week, but NOTHING excuses him and them from the profoundly poor judgment manifested in what followed Joel's declaration of apostasy. It boggles the mind that anyone there would have taken communion from the man, much less prayed a blessing over him, functionally commissioning him to "lay service" in an apostate church, what our Presbyterian forefathers rightly referred to as one of the "synagogues of Satan" (WCF 25.5) extant in our fallen world. By the way, our Confession continues... "There is no other head of the church but the Lord Jesus Christ. Nor can the pope of Rome, in any sense, be head thereof" (WCF 25.6).

One of the MANY follies of the Roman Catholic Church is the demand put upon its members to engage in idolatrous false worship: - veneration of canonized Saints and Mary; - adoration of/by images and relics; - the obeisance paid to the Pope as infallible "vicar of Christ on earth" and head of the Church. But the primary and single most important element of keeping God's Word (which is attached to a sure blessing in Rev. 22:7) is that worship due to God is due to HIM ALONE. Thus, when John the Revelator "fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed" to him the things contained in Revelation (22:8), the heavenly servant of God shrieked, "You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book. Worship God" (22:9). Keep the Word of God. Worship God alone. Soli Deo Gloria. Flee from the harlotry of Rome.

@smashbaals It does because once brought to light it’s an issue of church discipline, which serves to correct the drift its self and the temptation/desire to drift in others.

NEW: Police release footage of man getting sniped in the forehead after holding two people hostage at a Bank of America. 36-year-old Sterling Alavache was shot dead in February by a SWAT sniper in southwest Florida. The sniper shot through a computer monitor, in between the two hostages and nailed Alavache in the forehead. The suspect made bomb threats and was holding the hostages at knifepoint. “When he presented deadly force like that, our SWAT sniper shot and killed the suspect. We were in fear for her life and her safety,” Sheriff Carmine Marceno said. Epic.
