I think I’ve made my feelings on freedom of expression clear, but I am getting extremely annoyed by the Irish media failing to do their ethical duty and report on the Macklemore situation accurately. In 2014 Macklemore performed in ‘Jewface’ with a massive hooked nose, something he issued an apology for after widespread backlash. Any Irish coverage about him being removed from Ed Sheeran’s show that does not include this fact is fundamentally dishonest. It is directly relevant that a man being accused of antisemitism literally performed in Jewface. Indeed, this is the reason that most of my friends have issue with him. People may tie themselves in knots to deny that Macklemore’s anti-Israel stance has anything to do with the blatant antisemitism he openly displayed in 2014, but most good faith people would be highly skeptical in this regard. Especially given that his 2024 song on Israel/Palestine invoked antisemitic tropes. The line ‘it’s always been about dollars and the colour of your pigment but white supremacy is finally on blast’ is a perfect blend of a classic antisemitic dog whistle and the dominant contemporary manifestation of antisemitism: rebranding Jews as ‘white’. So by all means, make your arguments on freedom of expression. I am probably sympathetic to them as someone who is a free speech maximalist myself. But please be honest and address Macklemore’s noted history of antisemitism. And to Irish journalists: do your jobs and for once in your lives adhere to the ethics of your profession and report on this issue truthfully and without bias.

I’ve stopped posting about this of late BUT : In Cambridge recently - there were four upper middle class educated grey haired white grandmas and one grey haired grandpa on a Saturday demonstration near the theatre. One of the non-jewish actors I work with who met quite a few of the survivors of October 7 at the recent Nova Exhibition went and asked the five Grey Grandparents what they thought about October 7 with the terrible rapes abductions murders & atrocitities carried out that day. The Gray Grandpa told the Actor that none of the atrocities really happened that it was all hearsay and speculation. One of the old middleclass Grey Grandmas said ‘actually I don’t care’ For the record having met many of the survivors, many of the rape survivors and many of the families who’s children were murdered at the Nova festival -I can categorically tell you that some of the worst atrocities I have ever heard of happened that day. Never allow anyone to deny what happened on October 7th. Please. It doesn’t matter what your political affiliation is but once you start denying rape and sexual violence to one group of people when there is empirical evidence- you will end up denying all. 🙌

With great sadness, we received information about the passing of Auschwitz Survivor Yehuda Widawski. He was born on 26 July 1919 in Turek, near Łódź, in central Poland. In 1933, the family moved to Łódź, where he became active in the Hashmonaim youth movement and later helped run a textile business that employed dozens of Jewish seamstresses producing army shirts and underwear. After the German occupation of Łódź in September 1939, the Widawskis were forced into the ghetto, where they continued textile work and ran one of the ghetto’s first soup kitchens from their home. In August 1944, during the ghetto’s final liquidation, Yehuda, his parents Abraham and Leah, and several siblings were deported to Auschwitz; his parents and eldest brother Gabriel were murdered on arrival in a gas chamber. Eight days later Yehuda and his younger brother Jehoszua (Szyja) were transferred to a forced‑labor camp in Friedland, where they produced airplane wings until the camp’s liberation by the Red Army in May 1945. Returning to Łódź after the war, Yehuda found their apartment occupied by others and learned that most of the family had perished; only he and his brother survived. He rebuilt a textile factory, married Lea, and had a son, Abraham. In 1950 he immigrated to Israel, where he founded and managed various commercial enterprises. In 1978 he returned to Poland to search for his grandmother’s grave in the Łódź Jewish cemetery; appalled by its condition, he began a long‑term project of archival research, field documentation, and restoration of Jewish burial sites across Poland. Over the following decades he helped identify and mark more than 3,000 graves and participated in the renovation of thousands more, becoming a central figure in Polish‑Israeli efforts to preserve Jewish memorial sites. Fun fact: the Venice Film Festival awarded a gold medal to Leni Riefenstahl's Nazi propaganda film "the Triumph of Will" in 1935 and the best film award to her Nazi propaganda film "Olympia" in 1938. Sadly, we don't know for how long they applauded both films.

13 September 1942 | The 31st transport of Jews deported from Drancy in German-occupied France arrived at #Auschwitz. The first selection took place in Kosel - some 300 Jews were chosen as laborers for the Schmelt organization. After the selection at Auschwitz, 2 men and 78 women were registered in the camp. The remaining grup, some 620 people, were murdered immediately in gas chambers. One of the murdered was Horst Rosenthal, a German-born French cartoonist of Jewish descent. He is best known for his 1942 French comic book Mickey au Camp de Gurs (Mickey Mouse in the Gurs Internment Camp) which he created while he was a prisoner at the Gurs internment camp in Vichy France during World War II. It was a 13-panel comic strip starring Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse, who is arrested on suspicion of being Jewish and sent to Gurs.
