Every new coding-agent session starts cold. You burn the first stretch of every run re-explaining the codebase — its architecture, the decisions you already made, the invariants you can't violate — before the agent does a single useful thing. 'Agent amnesia' is the quiet tax on everyone shipping with these tools. Tom Dorr's Jumbo (jumbocontext) goes at it directly: a local, model- and harness-agnostic CLI that gives agents persistent, structured memory. Instead of dumping a chat log, it models memory as typed aggregates — Project, Architecture, Components, Dependencies, Decisions, Guidelines, Invariants, Goals — and when the agent picks up a goal, Jumbo assembles a curated context packet coupled to that goal. It works with anything that reads AGENTS.md, runs instantly, and keeps everything on your machine with no network calls. This is the same move every stateful system eventually makes: externalize the state. Web apps went from stateless CGI to session stores and durable databases; editors added persistent project indexes so they didn't re-parse the world on every keystroke. Agents are now hitting the moment where in-context memory isn't enough and a durable, queryable store becomes a first-class layer. The bottleneck it exposes isn't reasoning quality — frontier models are already smart enough. It's the loss of accumulated project decisions between runs, the institutional memory that makes a senior engineer faster than a smart stranger. Memory is becoming its own layer of the agent stack, distinct from the model and the harness.
