THE CONSEQUENCES OF ’98 Hugo Chávez’s nationalist adventure ended with Venezuela losing its sovereignty. The man who showed up waving the flag of national dignity wound up handing security over to the Cuban apparatus and the economy over to creditors in Moscow and Beijing, and now the country has to accept a stabilization managed out of Washington. Every year of anti-imperialist survival cost another strip of real autonomy. In ’98, the mix of shallow voting and a guilty elite made for a Molotov cocktail. People voted because an establishment closed in on itself had stopped answering to a citizenry that felt orphaned, and that orphanhood pushed them to listen to the siren song of the populist who promised to hand their happiness back to them. That’s why Venezuela was a cautionary tale. The country did this almost twenty years before the rest of the world discovered its own man on horseback. The mea culpa that needs singing points upward, toward the center that produced the orphanhood, and the cycle only breaks by rebuilding what its absence left in ruins. But always singing that mea culpa, so we don’t repeat the mistakes of the past.

@TheFuncGlitch What? This makes no sense. Tenants can stop eviction proceedings by paying the rent owed. The check not arriving would at worst be a dispute over a late fee. Not an eviction.

One of the major issues with USCIS, ICE, and DOS "tough on crime" approach is they do not used reasoned decision making at any step. Here I am writing a response to USCIS' form Notice of Intent to Deny a benefit request because of the client's "criminal record." Turns out, the client was the VICTIM of domestic violence. Police arrested both individuals at the scene of the disturbance so client appears in NCIC. The state confirmed her status as a victim. Yet, this individual had their SEVIS terminated, visa revoked, and now a notice of intent to deny because she was the victim of a crime. Shame on DHS and DOS.
