May 3, 2011. Manchester United travelled to the San Siro with one mission: Stop Andrea Pirlo. Sir Alex Ferguson knew that if Pirlo was allowed time on the ball, AC Milan could control the game. So instead of changing his entire system… He gave one man a job. Park Ji-sung. Not to score. Not to create. Not to be the star. Just to make Pirlo’s night a nightmare. From the first whistle, Park was everywhere. When Pirlo dropped deep, Park followed. When Pirlo drifted wide, Park followed. When Pirlo looked up for a pass, Park was already there. Pirlo couldn’t dictate the tempo. He couldn’t find his rhythm. Every touch came under pressure. Every pass felt rushed. It was one of the greatest man-marking performances modern football has ever seen. Manchester United won 4-0 on the night (7-2 on aggregate), and while Wayne Rooney scored twice and Javier Hernández grabbed another, many fans left talking about the man who barely gave Pirlo a second to breathe. Years later, Pirlo himself admitted that whenever he closed his eyes, he could still see Park Ji-sung chasing him. It wasn’t the goals that made Park unforgettable. It was his sacrifice. Every great team has superstars. The greatest teams also have players willing to do the jobs nobody else wants. Park Ji-sung was one of them. And Sir Alex Ferguson knew exactly how priceless he was.
