That SMS saying "BUY THIS STOCK, target price ₹120"? SEBI just banned 222 people for sending it. And the scam is smarter than you think: This week, SEBI released a 394-page order on pump-and-dump schemes in 5 stocks - Mauria Udyog, Vishal Fabrics, 7NR Retail, GBL Industries, and Darjeeling Ropeway. Here's exactly how it worked: Step 1: These were dead stocks. No liquidity. No corporate announcements. No improving numbers. Step 2: A network of connected entities started trading the shares among themselves. Same money, circling. To you and me, it looked like "volume is picking up." Step 3: Bulk SMSes went out with sender names mimicking India's leading stock brokers. "Buy recommendation." Looked official. Wasn't. Step 4: Retail investors rushed in. Prices surged. Mauria Udyog's stock jumped while the company was making losses and revenue was falling. Step 5: The "offloaders" sold at the top. Retail investors became the exit. Now the part that should bother you. In one company, 62 of its own employees traded in the scheme and quietly transferred their sale proceeds back to the promoters. The promoters were the ultimate beneficiaries. An RBI-registered NBFC was found playing a prominent role in creating the artificial volume. And in Darjeeling Ropeway, the promoter bought the company, pumped it, and exited at inflated prices - all within a year. SEBI's verdict: 222 entities barred for 4-7 years. ₹47.7 crore in penalties. ₹143 crore of illegal gains to be disgorged. The mastermind alone got a ₹10 crore penalty. But note the timeline. The scam ran from 2017 to 2020. The final order came in 2026. Justice took 6 years. The investor who bought at the top gets nothing back directly. So here's the only rule you need: if a stock tip reaches your phone for free, you are not the customer. You are the exit liquidity.
