Justine Damond, an Australian–American woman and meditation coach, called 911 on July 15, 2017, reporting what she believed might be a sexual assault behind her South Minneapolis home. She emerged barefoot and wearing pajamas into a dark alley. Officer Mohamed Noor, seated in the passenger seat of a police SUV with lights off, fired a single shot through the driver‑side window as she approached the driver’s side, fatally striking her in the abdomen. Noor was charged with second‑degree murder, third‑degree murder (Minnesota’s “depraved‑mind” charge), and second‑degree manslaughter. In April 2019, a jury convicted him of the latter two counts, acquitting on second‑degree murder. He was sentenced to 12½ years in prison. However, on September 15, 2021, the Minnesota Supreme Court overturned the third‑degree murder conviction, ruling that under state law the charge did not apply because the conduct was aimed at a specific person, not carried out with “generalized indifference to human life” as the statute requires. His sentence was then reduced to 57 months (4 years and 9 months) on the manslaughter conviction, including credit for time served. He was released on June 27, 2022, and remained on supervised release until January 24, 2024, as is standard in Minnesota for two‑thirds served in prison plus supervised release.
