At President Trump’s direction, United States negotiators visited both Moscow and Kyiv in order to facilitate additional dialogue to end the Russia-Ukraine War. Ahead of the trip, the Russians and Ukrainians agreed to a three-day no-shoot policy to enable these discussions to occur. Special Envoy Witkoff, Jared Kushner, and officials from the National Security Council, State Department, and Treasury Department met with both President Putin of Russia and President Zelenskyy of Ukraine in order to discuss each side’s proposals with the other. In Kyiv, the delegations were also joined by national security advisors from the United Kingdom, Germany, and France to collaborate on the path forward. Substantive progress was made, including movement on scheduling additional trilateral talks. President Trump is working hard to stop the killing and work towards a lasting and durable peace.

The head of the Greek Orthodox Church in Istanbul, Bartholomew I, just said he hopes his church and the Catholic Church can be fully united again one day. This would not mean all Orthodox Christians become Catholic. The biggest Orthodox church (the Russian one) is against it and would stay separate. It would only involve the churches that follow the patriarch in Istanbul - mainly Greek Orthodox communities plus some others that already side with him. If it happened, those churches would keep their own style of worship but accept the Pope, similar to how the Maronite Church already works. That is why many Orthodox people oppose it. Right now it is only a hope, not something that is actually happening.

Yes, the Dead Sea Scrolls, discovered in 1947, provided stunning confirmation of the reliability of the Hebrew Bible. Previously the oldest complete copy of the Hebrew Bible, the so-called Masoretic text, was from around 1000 A.D. That text is called the Leningrad Codex. The Dead Sea Scrolls, dating from the 3rd to the first centuries BC, proved the Masoretic scribes had not altered the text in over a thousand years. The Great Isaiah scroll for instance was virtually identical to the Masoretic version, with the differences being tiny and insignificant. But interestingly the reliability of the Masoretic text could have been largely established without the Dead Sea Scrolls. After all, the Hebrew Bible had between the 3rd and 1st centuries BC been translated into Greek. This was done by scholars working in Alexandria and a few other places, and the translation is called the Septuagint. So one could easily compare the Septuagint with the Masoretic script to see if, and to what extent, the text had been changed. In fact, it had not. And this fact was then further corroborated by the Dead Sea manuscripts found around 75 years ago. Bottom line: The Jews today read the same ancient Hebrew Scriptures that Jesus did. And so do we.
